Abstract:
This layer delineates the geographic subdivisions (to the sub-ecoregion level) of California defined for The Jepson Manual: Higher Plants of California (Hickman, 1993). It also includes elevation boundaries at 500m intervals (derived from the 1:250,000 DEM from USGS). Finally, these sub-ecoregion/elevation zones were combined with native plant species distribution information (as defined in the Jepson Manual) to create a theme indicating native plant species richness within 500m elevation bands of Jepson sub-ecoregions. A digital data layer of Jepson ecoregion boundaries was obtained from the Biogeogrphy Lab at UC Santa Barbara. These regions (10 major ecoregion divisions) were developed for the Jepson flora to aid in describing where plant species were known to occur. The regions were defined by natural features, including broadly defined vegetation types, and geologic, topographic, and climatic variation. The Flora authors relied heavily on the Potential Natural Vegetation map of K?chler (1977) in delineating regions. The Flora included only a page-size representation of the map of three provinces, subdivided into ten regions, but also provided geographic descriptions of the boundaries between regions and subregions. Based on these descriptions, the Biogeography Lab (UC Santa Barbara) digitized the boundaries of the ten regions using 1990 Landsat imagery and ancillary digital data at a 1:100,000 map scale. These regions were used for compiling and analyzing the California Gap Analysis database. The Information Center for the Environment (ICE) GIS lab at UC Davis (within the Division of Environmental Studies) then digitized the sub-ecoregions indicated in the Jepson Manual using a combination of Shaded Relief backdrop and visual interpretation of the map in the Jepson Manual. The sub-ecoregion layer was then unioned with a elevation zone layer (generated from the 1:250,000 Digital Elevation Model from USGS) at 500m intervals. The plant information was compiled using the Jepson Manual description fields indicating elevation ranges and Jepson sub-ecoregions within which the plant is known to occur. An Excel file was compiled (by Botanist Dr. John Hunter) indicating presence for each plant within sub-ecoregion and known elevation ranges. This table was then manipulated in order to obtain a count of species (species richness) for each elevation zone/sub-ecoregion combination. Finally, this information was joined to the coverage described, placed in rank order, and then normalized to between 0 and 1 (with 1 indicating the highest species richness and 0 indicating the lowest).
