Abstract:
This experiment began in 1942 at a cool temperate site. The Land use and treatments in the project are as follows: Land use: 4 categories: 1. 1942-1961; 2. 1942-1967; 3. 1967-1972; 4. 1942-present. 1,2. Under arable/hort. crops. Treatments: FYM 2 rates, Veg. & FYM compost 2 rates. Other trts on 1. only: Sewage sludge 2 rates, Sewage compost 2 rates. 3. Arable/hort Treatments: Inorganic fertilizers with/without peat. 4. 19442-72 Arable/hort, 1972-1982 grass, 1982-89 arable, 1989-> clover. Treatments: Inorganic fertilizers only. This is a very rough summary of a very complicated experiment. MEASUREMENTS MADE DURING THE EXPERIMENT (Data Available) a) Vegetation measurements made and frequency Yield: Yearly, except clover/grass Total above-ground dry matter: Occasional Total dry matter offtake: Occasional Nitrogen content of offtake: Occasional Heavy metals in plants b) Soil sampling Time zero soil measurements taken. Immediately before experiment in 1942. 0-15 inches and 15-30 inches. Samples kept. C, N, P, heavy metals measured. Details of soil sampling method: 3 cm semicylindrical auger, 15 cores per plot, all at least 1 m from plot edges on a random walk. Soil is separated into layers. Details of measuring depths and soil layers: Not every year. 0-9 inches most common. Also in 1961, 1967, 1984 some or all of 0-9,9-12,12-18,18-24,24-27 or 24-30 inches. c) Soil measurements made and frequency Total carbon: 1942,51,57,61,67,72,74,82,84 Method of measuring total carbon: Pre 1960s, Walkley Black. 1960s -> modified (Jenkinson) Tinsley. Biomass carbon: 1984,92 Method of measuring biomass carbon: 1984: Fumigation-extraction; 1992: Fumigation-incubation. Total nitrogen: 1942,51,57,61,67,72,74,84 Method of measuring total nitrogen: Kjeldahl Total mineral nitrogen: 1984 Method of measuring total mineral nitrogen: 2m KCl/colorimetry Soil bulk density or weight: 1985 Method of measuring soil bulk density or weight: Lawes & Gilbert box Other nutrients: P - bicarbonate (Olsen) extract. Ammonium acetate exchangeable K, Ca, Mg. Atmospheric inputs: Controls have been used to estimate inputs of PAHs, PCBs. Other measurements: Heavy metals in plants d) Details of the meteorological station Nearest meteorological station to the site: Woburn which is .2 km from the site at coordinates 0deg36min W, 52deg2min N.
