Abstract:
-
This experiment began in 1902 at a Cool Temperate site in Germany.
The parent material of the soil is loess which was deposited during
the Weischel ice age as a 120-150 cm thick layer over calcareous
moraine material of high density from the Saale ice age. The original
ecosystem at this site was a grassland. The land use previous to the
experiment was arable land.
The crop rotations in this project are: sugar beet,spring
barley,potatoes,winter wheat. The treatments are: (no lime,lime every
4 years,+25% legumes in rotation)x(no FYM,20t
FYM/2yrs,30tFYM/2yrs)x(nil,PK,N,NK,NP,NPK).
The measurements made (data available), frequency, and methodology are
listed below:
a) Vegetation measurements made and frequency
Yield: Every year
Total above-ground dry matter: Not regularly
Total dry matter offtake: Every year
Carbon content of offtake: Every year
Nitrogen content of offtake: Every year
Every year: P, K, Mg on 6 main treatments.
b) Soil sampling
Details of soil sampling method: Soil samples are taken with an
auger from the 0-30 cm layer. Samples are taken from the margins of
the plots (width of margin 3m at minimum depending on crop). Mixed
sample from 20 cores. Air-dried, ground to <2 mm, mechanical device
for subsampling. Soil is separated into layers.
Details of measuring depths and soil layers: 0-30 cm every year.
30-60,60-100 cm not regularly. Deep sampling to a depth of 5 m in the
last 3 years.
c) Soil measurements made and frequency
Total carbon: 6 main treatments every year, the rest every 4 years
after winter wheat harvest
Method of measuring total carbon: Dry combustion , CO2 detection by
infrared adsorption (according to DIN (Deutsche Industrie-Norm) H3)
Biomass carbon: Not regularly
Method of measuring biomass carbon: Substrate-induced respiration
Carbon measurements in other organic matter fractions: Not
regularly
Method of measuring carbon in other organic matter fractions:
Hot-water soluble carbon: hot-water extraction of soil, Chws content
is determined colorimetrically or titrimetrically after oxidation by
bichromate (according to DIN H3)
Carbon dioxide evolution: Not regularly
Method of measuring carbon dioxide evolution: Biological
activity: incubation at 25%C and 60% water capacity, detection of CO2
by infrared adsorption (INFRALYT).
Total nitrogen: 6 main treatments yearly, others 4-yearly after
winter wheat harvest
Method of measuring total nitrogen: Dissolving of organic N at
380deg C in conc. sulphuric acid via catalytic converter (Se), water
vapour distillation to drive out ammonium, titration (according to DIN
H11).
Method of measuring nitrogen in other organic matter fractions:
Hot water soluble N: hot water extraction of soil, N determination
after Kjeldahl (distillation, titration) (according to DIN H11).
Nitrate nitrogen: 6 main treatments yearly, others 4-yearly after
winter wheat harvest
Method of measuring nitrate nitrogen: Extraction with K2SO4.
Measurement by ion-selective electrode.
Ammonium nitrogen: 6 main treatments yearly, others 4-yearly after
winter wheat harvest
Method of measuring ammonium nitrogen: Extraction with K2SO4.
Measurement by ion-selective electrode.
Soil bulk density or weight: Not regularly
Method of measuring soil bulk density or weight: Drying of 20 g
air-dried soil at 105 deg C for 8 hours; weighing (=dry weight),
filling up with xylol, determination of xylol consumption.
Other nutrients: P, K, Mg every year; Cu, B, Mn, Zn, Mo, Ca not
regularly. 6 main treatments only.
Atmospheric inputs: PAHs: soil, plant, air samples; determination
by HPLC/F. N: dry and wet deposition.
FYM analysis: DM, N, P and K yearly since 1903; C analysis of FYM
since 1988. Sugar content of sugar beet & starch content of potatoes:
yearly measurements.

measurements are taken on samples from the nil plots. On
other variants only total soil N-15 measurements at irregular intervals.
