Abstract:
GIS U.S. Snowfall Maps is a web based product available at the National Climatic Data Center (NCDC). The data is extracted from the digital dataset U.S. COOP Summary of the Month (DSI-3220). This is meteorological data from the U.S. Cooperative Observer Network (COOP), which consists of stations operated by state universities, state or federal agencies, and also private individuals whose stations are managed and maintained by the National Weather Service (NWS). The network includes regular NWS offices, and airports with weather stations operated by the NWS or the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The Network also includes U.S. military bases. There are typically about 8,000 stations operating in any one year. The earliest data is from 1886 and is organized by month. Attributes included are COOP ID, WBAN ID, Station Name, State, Year, Latitude, Longitude, Station Elevation, Monthly Snowfall, Annual Snowfall, and Seasonal Snowfall. To make a wide range of climatic data available to researchers and the public. ATTRIBUTE ACCURACY REPORT: Beginning with the data for January 1982, Cooperative data were processed through a completely revised system. Relying heavily on new computer editing procedures, data have been subjected to internal consistency checks, compared against climatological limits, checked serially, and evaluated against surrounding station observations. The historical data were converted from existing digital files and structured into the element structure format. These data were processed through a gross value check and not the current edit system. It is NCDC's goal to bring these historical files up to the same level of quality as those from 1982 onward as resources become available. Thus, benign neglect, state of the art processing (circa 1952), and limited money/people resources have contributed toward less than optimum conditions in maintaining integrity of the digital files before 1982. Some data files contain what appears to be near duplicate records. For example, one record may contain data for January through April and show the remaining months as missing. The second record may show data for January through April as missing and the remaining months as present. The reason there are two records is that the station changed climate divisions during the year. The first record will show some division number, and the second record will show a different division number.
