This database contains disease and population data collected during
Oxford Lab's annual Modified Fall Oyster Survey.
The dataset contains information designed to characterize and assess
the condition and trends of Maryland oyster populations. The program
to collect the data was developed as a modification to the Department
of Natural Resources, Division of Fisheries, existing Fall Oyster
Survey. The purpose of the modifications was to develop a valid
long-term oyster monitoring program from an existing survey which was
geared to providing qualitative information on a site specific basis,
primarily for specific fishery management needs.
The design of the modified survey is intended to provide annual
estimates of Baywide and regional oyster spatfall intensity,
mortality, disease, and population size structure. Statistical
validity and consistency of data were parmount considerations in the
modified oyster design. The aim was to assist oyster management with
a reliable and useful representation of the resource, based upon a
feasible and cost-effective monitoring program consistent with
historical observations.
The study area covered from Tangiers Sound to Swan Point (northern
part of mouth of Chester River) and consisted of 64 sites.
Sixty-four charted oyster bars distributed throughout the Maryland
portion of Chesapeake Bay were chosen to provide geographical coverage
of oyster regions of the State. Site selection represented a consensus
of Cooperative Oxford Laboratory and Fisheries Division personnel.
The geographic area includes the areas of Broad Creek, Bay Bridge
North, Chester River, Choptank River, Eastern Bay, Fishing Bay, Harris
Creek, Holland Straits, Hongs River, Little Choptank River, Manokin
River, Mid-Eastern Shore, Miles River, Nanticoke River, Poplar Island,
Potomac River, Pocomoke Sound, Patuxent River, St. Marys River, Tred
Avon River, Tangier Sound, Upper Bay, Wicomico River, and Western
Shore.
