These data sets contain weekly and monthly heating and cooling degree day data for 200 U.S. cities. Each station record contains the total from the summation of daily values, departure from the normal (based on 1951-1980), departure from last year's total, accumulated total from the beginning of the season, departure from the accumulated season normal and percentage, and departure from last year's accumulated season normal and percentage. The data are collected from ground stations throughout the U.S., including Alaska and Hawaii. The data are displayed in tabular form. CAC only keeps the previous week's and month's data on-line, but you can contact NOAA's National Climatic Data Center for the historical data.
Degree day is a quantitative index demonstrated to reflect demand for energy to heat or cool houses and businesses. This index is derived from daily temperature observations at nearly 200 major weather stations in the U.S. The 'cooling year' during which cooling degree data are accumulated extends from January 1st to December 31st. The 'heating year' during which heating degree days are accumulated extends from July 1st to June 30th. A mean daily temperature (average of the daily maximum and minimum temperatures) of 65 degrees F is the base for heating and cooling degree day computations. The cooling degree days are summations of positive differences between the mean daily temperature and the 65 degree F base. Heating degree days are summations of negative differences between the mean daily temperature and the 65 degree F base. For example, cooling degree days for a station with daily mean temperatures during a seven-day period of 67,62,70,74,78,65 and 68, are 2,0,5, 9,13,0,and 3, for a total for the week of 32 cooling degree days. Heating degree days for the same period are 0,3,0,0,0,0,and 0, for a total for the week of 3 heating degree days.
