Abstract:
ENGLISH The purpose of this project is to make a full study of the Deception Island volcanic system. The geologic research will be carried on through various disciplines. Thus, structure, volcanic stratigraphy, and petrology of magmatic and piroclastic sequences, together with volume and gas composition, will be analyzed with special emphasis in the island seismologic monitoring. In recent years the planet was affected by a great number of natural catastrophes, with lost of human lives and destruction of productive zones. Due to the great scientific and tourist activity on the island (around thousands of tourists per year) the Argentine Antarctic Institute and the Superior Council of Scientific Investigations of Spain have created in 1993 the Deception Volcanologic Observatory (World Organization of Volcano Observatories Directory Nº 1900-03), in order to investigate and watch over the island volcanic activity. Deception Island has a recent eruptive history registered from 1967 until today. In the last years, considerable seismic activity has been registered reaching its maximum during the 1991/1992 and 1998/1999 campaigns. This anomalous activity, added to the changes of the fumarole gases' chemical composition, was interpreted as the product of magmatic intrusions located near the surface at approximately 500 m in depth. In order to carry out this project, Deception Island geology will be studied with emphasis on stratigraphic and structural characteristics to determine its volcanic evolution. The different units will be analyzed, and detailed profiles in pyroclastic rock outcrops will be revealed with the object to study the acting processes. Petrographic and geochemical studies of the volcanic rocks, together with the profiles of pyroclastic rock outcrops, will allow us to obtain new data on the island geologic evolution. Special emphasis will be given to geochemical research and the study of emergent gases from the different fumarole manifestations, as well as the chemical composition of the existing bodies of water. These studies will be directly applied to the evaluation of an eventual reactivation of the volcanic system. Therefore, seismologic monitoring by means of the installation of modules of digital stations of one and three components with continuous registration will be carried out. Analysis and classification of the registrations with specific programs will be done in order to identify volcanic and/or tectonic events and to study them together with geochemical results of fumarole gases. Finally, one of the primary targets of the present project is to consolidate a multidisciplinary research group to carry out the surveillance of active volcanoes, forming new professionals in this science field, which is little developed in Argentina in spite of the abundance of active volcanoes in the mountain region. SPANISH El presente proyecto tiene por objeto el estudio integral del sistema volcánico representado por la isla Decepción. El desarrollo de esta investigación planea el estudio geológico a través de varias disciplinas, de esta manera se analizará la estructura, estratigrafía volcánica, petrología de secuencias magmáticas y piroclásticas, el volumen y composición de los gases y se pondrá especial énfasis en la actividad sísmica de la isla. Esta investigación será aplicada al seguimiento de la actividad volcánica de la isla y cumplir de esta manera con las tareas del Observatorio Volcanológico (World Organization of Volcano Observatories Directory Nº 1900-03) que funciona en la misma y la de aviso por medio de las autoridades nacionales a los organismos internacionales. La Isla Decepción se encuentra actualmente en plena actividad con una historia eruptiva reciente que se registra desde 1967 hasta la actualidad. Por lo tanto representa un laboratorio natural de investigación que llevó al Instituto Antártico Argentino y el Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas de España a crear en 1993 el Observatorio Volcanológico Decepción, con el objeto de vigilar la actividad volcánica de la isla. Si bien la isla se encuentra deshabitada gran parte del año, la actividad turística que presenta la isla es muy intensa. Con este proyecto se planea un estudio complementario integrador que permitirá un análisis y evaluación más precisa de los fenómenos precursores de la actividad magmática de la isla. Dada las características que presenta 1 de 16 la actividad volcánica, el equipo de trabajo planea para llevar a cabo este proyecto la instalación de una serie de "redes" que tendrán por objeto tener un panorama permanente de la isla. Por lo tanto, se llevará a cabo el seguimiento sismológico mediante la instalación de módulos de estaciones digitales de una y tres componentes con registro continuo. Se realizará el análisis y clasificación de los registros con programas específicos a fin de identificar eventos volcánicos y/o tectónicos (locales y/o regionales) y analizarlos junto a los resultados geoquímicos de los gases fumarólicos. Se dará especial énfasis en las investigaciones geoquímicas de los gases emergentes y cuerpos de agua, con el fin de evaluar la importancia del aporte de composiciones provenientes del sistema profundo en el ambiente y el circuito hidrológico superficial, e individualizar los compuestos potencialmente tóxicos evaluando la influencia que pueda tener en el ambiente. Paralelamente se estudiará la geología de la Isla Decepción en lo que respecta a la estratigrafía volcánica y estructura, con el fin de determinar la evolución magmática de la misma. Se llevarán adelante estudios petrográfico y geoquímicos de las volcanitas para que junto al estudio de las rocas piroclásticas se aporten nuevos datos sobre la evolución geológica de la isla. Se plantea la realización de sondeos magnetoteluricos en la banda de frecuencias de 0.057 s hasta 300 s, con el objeto de obtener el perfil de resistividades del subsuelo de la Isla Decepción. Esta metodología, no aplicada antes en la isla, intentará determinar la posible existencia, profundidad y morfología de la cámara magmática, dato que servirá para conocer y coadyuvar a un grado mas del conocimiento la peligrosidad del sitio. Por último, el presente proyecto tiene como objetivo primordial la consolidación de un grupo multidisciplinario para llevar a cabo la vigilancia de volcanes activos, formando nuevos profesionales en este campo de la ciencia, poco desarrollada en nuestro país, a pesar de la abundancia de volcanes activos en la región cordillerana.
