Abstract:
This data set contains boat-based winter waterbird surveys from the Wolves archipelago in the Bay of Fundy, New Brunswick Canada. This area is a known wintering location of the Eastern Canadian Harlequin Duck population (appr. 50 birds). Such Harlequin Duck winter surveys were carried out since long time on an occasional and regular basis. The survey effort was shared between the Canadian Wildlife Service, the Provincial Government of New Brunswick and others. The surveys described here stem from wintering Razorbill surveys with ACWERN (Atlantic Cooperative Wildlife Ecology Research Network) and CWS, carried out by Falk Huettmann and colleagues in 1998. Surveys started at Blacks Harbour, mainland New Brunswick. They were boat-based and reported all waterbirds and sea mammals encountered. Most surveys were done during calm weather and in the late morning and noon hours. The purpose of the dataset is to provide general abundance information on wintering Harlequin Ducks, waterbirds, seabirds and sea mammals for the Wolves Archipelago in the Bay of Fundy.

Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
Sightings are referenced to the observer, the specific cruise and ship name, ship speed, time and date. GPS instrumentation was not available to the observers. However, a consistent route around the island was followed for each survey; sightings can be geo-referenced. For details see field notes. Methodology is consistent throughout. The same principle observer (FH) was present on all cruises; two additional observers and the captain were present as well. Cruise start and end locations are fixed (Blacks Harbour); minor variations in the path between start and end points are related to tide, weather and traffic conditions. Transects with confirmed absence are reported. Horizontal Positional Accuracy Report: As noted above, cruise start and end points are fixed in space. Locations of sightings can be inferred from time, island name, start and end point data. Vertical Positional Accuracy: Ship cruise on water. Altitudinal variations are caused by tidal changes, waves or ship height are all irrelevant under conditions encountered in this study. Vertical Positional Accuracy: Ship cruise on water. Altitudinal variations are caused by tidal changes, waves or ship height are all irrelevant under conditions encountered in this study. Observers surveyed primarily for Harlequin Ducks, facing towards the island side. Other sightings were reported as well. Cruise dates, times, observers are available from the principal investigator. The survey route was tried to keep constant, however, weather and waves could modify the survey design. Surveys were carried out 9 November 1998 (10:00-12:15) , 21 December 1998 (12:00-14:15) and 30 December 1998 (13:00-14:40). Additional surveys were carried out for the years 1995-1999 and beyond by Kim Mahwinney for Pat Kehoe of the Provincial Government of New Brunswick, by the Canadian Wildlife Service (contact: John Chardine, Andrew Boyne), and others.
