Abstract:
This experiment began in 1963 at a cool temperate site. Before the experiment began, the soil has been cultivated for at least 20 years according to standard agricultural recommendations, including crop rotation, tillage, fertilization and plant protection. The soil at the site is a brown calcereous sandy soil. The experiment consists of the following land uses and treatments: 1992 Sugar beet, 1993 winter-wheat, 1994 maize, 1995 winter-wheat with following treatments: Control (no organic ammendments), systematic residue incorporation, Soil farmyard manure (40t/ha) every four years (1992). There is one crop per year and each main treatment is subdivided into two which are sub-treatments with mineral fertilizer at either 50 or 120 kgN/ha. There are four replicates. The measurements made, methodology, and frequency are listed below: a) Vegetation measurements made and frequency Yield: Yearly Total above-ground dry matter: Yearly Carbon content of offtake: Periodically Nitrogen content of offtake: Periodically Yearly since 1994 b) Soil sampling Time zero soil measurements taken. One soil (5-25cm) sample for whole plot at beginning of the trial - analysed for texture, organic matter content, CaCO3, pH (in water), available Pand K (Dirks-Scheffer) Details of soil sampling method: Hand auger, 8-12 cores per microplot (Eijkelkamp 01.12) For mineral N: 0-90cm sampler separated into three30cm fractions with 4-6 cores per microplot Soil is separated into layers Details of measuring depths and soil layers: Standard routine analysis at end of four year rotation, soil (5-25cm) samples. Mineral and mobilizable N: recent and infrequent sampling of the 0,30,60,90 cm layers. c) Soil measurements made and frequency Total carbon: Every four years Method of measuring total carbon: Wet combustion K2Cr2O7/H2SO4 Total nitrogen: Infrequent Method of measuring total nitrogen: Kjeldahl Total mineral nitrogen: Infrequent Method of measuring total mineral nitrogen: 0.01 M CaCl2 extraction (2 hours) N-Nh4+, N-NO3-, and N-NO2 on segmented flow coloimetric analyser (SKALAR-Methods) Nitrogen measurements in other organic matter fractions: Infrequent Method of measuring nitrogen in other organic matter fractions: Hot-water extraction (2 hours), total N by Dumas combustion and "mobilizable N and C" by UV/persulphate oxidation on SKALAR.
