Abstract:
Tropical SE Asia susceptible to droughts and dry years show marked increases in fire activity. e.g. emissions from southern Borneo increase 10 fold for 1/3 decrease in dry season precipitation Commodity market for palm oil is an economic driver for large scale clearing and drainage of forested peatlands in this region Fire used to remove biomass, most effective during dry seasons and periodic droughts, fires escape and burn forests and peat deposits Massive amounts of carbon stored in these systems (e.g. about 10 years of global fossil fuel emissions equivalent is stored in Indonesian peat forests) Indonesia is the 3rd largest greenhouse gas emitter while ranked only 27th for fossil fuel emissions) Scientific significance: A large amount of the interannual variability in the atmospheric CO2 growth rate is caused by the year-to-year varying rate of tropical deforestation fires. Previously atmospheric variability was attributed all to the balance of photosythesis and respiration. The burning of forests varies from year to year because humans are economically motivated to replace forests with agriculture and dry conditions make it easier to clear but can also lead to escaped, uncontrolled burning. The amounts of carbon stored in living and dead biomass is massive and vulnerable to climate change and human activities. credit: NASA
