Abstract:
This project began in 1971 at a tropical site that was once natural forest. The soil is described as a Beni silty clay loam series of fine loamy mixed hyperthermic family of Aquic Hapludoll (USDA). There are three land-uses (rotations): A) Rice, B) Wheat and C) Cowpea fodder. The cowpea fodder receives no treatments except on one plot where Rhizobium biofertilizer has been used since 1981. Rice and wheat receive the following treatments (N-P2O5-K20 amounts in kg/ha given): 1) 50% NPK (Rice: 60-30-22.5; Wheat: 60-30-20), 2) 100% NPK (Rice: 120-60-45; Wheat: 120-60-40), 3) 150% NPK (Rice: 150-90-67.5; Wheat: 180-90-60), 4) 100% NPK plus hand weeding (NPK as for 2), 100% NPK plus Zn (NPK same as 2 plus foliar spray @ 1.14 kgZn/ha to each rice and wheat crop), 6) 100% NP (Rice and wheat: 120-60-0), 7) 100% N (Rice and wheat: 120-0-0), 8) 100% NPK plus FYM at 15 t/ha/y (Rice: 120-60-45; Wheat 158-78-37.5 [includes FYM content of N-P2O5-K2O applied to wheat only), 9) Biofertilizer [from 1981 onwards, before that as for 2] (Rice: Azolla; Wheat: Azotobacter), 10) 100% NPK [Sulphur free] (Rice: 120-60-45; Wheat 120-60-40), 11) Control (Rice and wheat: 0-0-0), 12) Fallow. The measurements made (data available), methodology, and frequency are listed below: a) Vegetation measurements made and frequency Yield: Yearly Total above-ground dry matter: Yearly Total dry matter offtake: Yearly Nitrogen content of offtake: Yearly P,K,S,Zn,Fe,Mn and Cu yearly. b) Soil sampling Time zero soil measurements taken. Details of soil sampling method: Initial composite sample was collected from 0-20cm with a spade. After the layout of the experiment, 10-12 cores from each plot were sampled using stainless steel tube auger for rice and a stainless steel auger for wheat and cowpea crops in a zig-zag as described by Jackson (1973) Soil Chemical Analysis. Printice-Hall of India Pvt Ltd., New Delhi, India. Subsequently, similar composite samples were drawn from each plot after each crop/annual cropping cycle. Soil is separated into layers. a) Details of the plots Width of smallest plot is 12 m Length of smallest plot is 25 m b) Details of replication, randomization and controls There are at least 4 replicates in the experiment. The experiment has a randomized plot design. Bulk crop rice was grown in 2-3 seasons before laying out of the experiment after selection of the site. Based on the fertility gradient (as far as possible), replications were assigned in such a way that all the treatments in one replication had more or less uniform fertility status. The treatments in each replication were allotted at random from random number tables in standard statistics textbook. There are absolute control plots (nil inputs), fallow plot; various treatments serve as controls for others.
