Abstract:
This long term experiment began in 1972. The experimental site is a tropical area, with a minimum annual temperature of 5.9 deg C, maximum annual temperature of 42.8 deg C, and mean annual rainfall of 1100 mm. The soil is characterized as Kheri series of fine montmorillonitic hyperthermic family of Typic Chromusterts (USDA). The soil properties are as follows: Layer 1 0-15cm - 10 YR 3/2 (moist) dark grey brown, clayey. Layer 2 15-36cm - 10 YR 4/2 (moist) very dark grey brown. Layer 3 36-63 cm - 10 YR 3/2 (moist) very dark grey brown, clayey. Layer 4 63-91cm - 10 YR 3/2 (moist) very dark grey brown, clayey (sliken sides observed). Layer 5 91-183 cm - 10 YR 3/2 (moist) very dark grey brown, clayey. Approximate water holding capacity: 49.3 mm per 250 mm Approximate cation exchange capacity: 490 mmol/kg Approximate soil organic matter content: 1% Approximate soil bulk density: 1.3 g/cm3 Percent clay (i.e. particles less than 2 um): 56.8% Percent silt (i.e. particles between 2 um and 20 um): 17.9% Percent sand (i.e. particles between 20 um and 200 um): 25.3% Approximate minimum soil pH: 7.6 Method of determining soil pH: pH measured in 1:2.5 soil:water. There are 3 land-uses: A) Soybean (rainfed), B) Wheat (irrigated as needed), C) Fodder maize (irrigated as needed). The following treatments apply to all crops and give the quantities of N-P2O5-K2O applied: 1) 50% NPK (Soyean: 10-40-10; Wheat: 60-40-20; Maize: 40-30-10), 2) 100% NPK (Soybean: 20-80-20; Wheat: 120-80-40; Maize: 80-60-20), 3) 150% NPK (Soybean: 30-120-30; Wheat: 180-120-60; Maize: 120-90-30), 4) 100% NPK plus hand weeding (NPK for all crop as 2), 5) 100% NPK plus Zn (NPK for all crops as 2 plus 10kgZn/ha), 6) 100% NP (Soybean: 20-80-0; Wheat: 120-80-40; Maize: 80-60-0), 7) 100% N (Soybean: 20-0-0; Wheat: 120-0-0; Maize: 80-0-0), 8) 100% NPK plus 15 t/ha FYM (Soybean: 58-98-57.5; Wheat & Maize as for 2 - includes NPK contents in FYM applied to soybean only). 9) 100% NPK - Sulphur (Sulphur free fertilizers applied at rates as for 2), 10) Control (All crops 0-0-0). Details of soil sampling method: Initial composite soil sample was collected from 0-25cm using a spade. After the layout of the experiment, 10-12 cores from each plot were sampled using a stainless steel auger following a zig-zag pattern as described by Jackson (1973) Soil Chemical Analysis. Printice-Hall of India Pvt Ltd., New Delhi, India. Subsequently, similar composite samples were drawn from each plot after each crop/annual cropping cycle. Measurements made during this experiment are listed in the parameters section of this record. Time zero soil measurements were taken. Width of smallest plot is 10.6 m Length of smallest plot is 17 m There are at least 4 replicates in the experiment. The experiment has a randomized plot design. Bulk crop of maize fodder was grown in 2-3 seasons before laying out the experiment after selection of the site. Based on the fertility gradient (as far as possible), replications were assigned in such a way that all the treatments in one replication had more or less uniform fertility status. The treatments in each replication were allotted using random number selected from standard statistical text books. An absolute control plot (nil inputs). Also, many treatments can be regarded as tretaments for others.
