Title: The collection of fossils, qualitative microbial studies and nitrogen fixation rates of the soils from several sites in the Ross Sea region
Description:
Abstract:
Preliminary qualitative microbiological studies were conducted at several sites in the Ross Sea Region including Cape Bird, Taylor Valley, Wright Valley and Shapeless Mountain and Mistake Peak on the Polar plateau. Soil samples (for microbiological studies) were taken for chemical and physical analysis and total microbial counts. Nitrogen fixation rates were determined in soils and mosses with the total 15N content and the conversion of 15NH4 to 15N gas measured. Samples were taken from penguin guano pools for chemical analysis. At Cape Bird the soils and pools in the penguin colonies and the soils of associated vegetation was sampled. Only the microbial biomass, 15N fixation and collection of fossils was carried out in the Beacons in the Upper Taylor Valley (with Permian plant fossils collected), Shapeless Mountain and Mistake Peak on the Polar Plateau (with Triassic plant fossils collected) and at Lake Brownworth and Vanda in the Wright Valley (no fossils collected at these sites).

This study was conducted as part of the University of Canterbury Antarctic Expedition. The data is contained within the publications or please contact the investigator for more information. In addition, the University of Canterbury Antarctic Expedition No 19 report (contained in the logistics report at Antarctic New Zealand) contains some of the preliminary data from this study. It outlines the methods of study and then reports some preliminary findings including: microscopic examination of invertebrates living in moss and algae samples, micro-organisms (bacteria and algae) detected at Moss site, Cape Bird, nitrogen fixation results, biomass determinations, soil and nitrogen distribution analysis, physical and chemical properties of Cape Bird Soils (Table 1: sample, pH, %N, loss on ignition 600C%, sand % and gravel size, silt% and size, clate % sized), % of total sample Nitrogen) (Table 2: sample, %N, NH4-N, hexosamine-N, α amino-N, HUN, insoluble N, exchangeable NH4+NO3-N, fixed NH4), and general comments on the results of the Dry Valley and Polar Plateau studies (Lake Fryxell, Canada Glacier, Beacon site, Polar plateau, Lake Brownworth, Lake Vanda). A table is presented for the plant areas on the Canada Glacier flush, surface soil and plant weights per 10cm2.
