Abstract:
The Plumes and Blooms program seeks to understand the sources of sediment plumes and phytoplankton blooms, as they relate to ocean color and to the sediment geochronology of the Santa Barbara Basin. This is critical for modeling the color of the sea and for the interpretation of the sedimentary record. The primary goal of the Plumes and Blooms research program is to develop numerical algorithms to relate the satellite-sensed ocean color signal to useful quantities for ocean scientists and coastal zone managers. Thus, in-situ oceanic optical, chemical and biological measurements are required. These have been collected on twice-monthly cruises since August 1996. The data are collected in a transect from Santa Rosa Island, across the Santa Barbara Channel to Goleta Point. In addition, process cruises are conducted when unusual conditions warrant, such as after heavy rains that wash fresh sediment into the channel. Four process cruises have been conducted: January 1997, October 1997, February 1998, and October 1998. A toxic bloom study was conducted in June 1998. Measurements made on these cruises include temperature and salinity, ocean color spectra, and water column profiles of red light transmission (index of suspended particulate load) and chlorophyll fluorescence (index of phytoplankton abundance). Water samples along the transect are used to distinguish the sources of particulate material as either terrigenous ("plumes") or derived from phytoplankton ("blooms").
