Abstract:

ABSTRACT: The Solar Backscatter Ultraviolet Radiometer-2 (SBUV/2) is an operational remote sensor designed to map, on a global scale, total ozone concentrations and the vertical distribution of ozone in the earth's atmosphere. The Product Master File (PMF) contains ozone information located in space and time, other meteorological information developed in support of the ozone computation, parameters indicating the validity of the individual ozone retrievals, and the radiance information derived from the SBUV/2 measurements.
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION: Implementation of the SBUV/2 system on the NOAA spacecraft is in response to Public Law 95-95, the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1977, which calls for the establishment by NOAA of a continuing program of research and monitoring of the stratosphere for the purpose of early detection of stratosphere changes and the climatic effects of such changes.Dates of data availability: NOAA-9 data available Dec 1984 - Feb 1998, NOAA-11 data available Sep 1988 - May 2004, NOAA-14 data available Dec 1994 to present, NOAA-16 data available Sep 2000 - present, NOAA-17 data available Jul 2002 - present. PURPOSE: For ozone research. Knowledge of the temporal and spatial distribution of atmospheric ozone is important since ozone strongly absorbs solar ultraviolet energy and prevents this harmful radiation from reaching the earth's surface.

ATTRIBUTE ACCURACY REPORT: This is an operational dataset which uses the best available calibration at the time of data collection. Follow-on reprocessing is done the NESDIS/ORA in conjunction with NASA Goddard Space Flight Center which carefully takes into account instrument performance and inter-satellite comparison. Users who are doing trend studies should consider using the reprocessed products. The uncertainties in the SBUV ozone data have three principal sources: uncertainties in the measurements, uncertainties in the physical quantities used in the algorithm, and uncertainties inherent in the mathematical methodology of the algorithm. Each of these sources of uncertainty can be manifested in one or more of these three ways: random error, an absolute error (or bias) that is independent of time and a time dependent error, or drift. Total ozone from SBUV has a bias of about 2% relative to the total ozone measured by the surface network of Dobson stations. Profile ozone has a bias of about 5%. In the determination of both bias and drift relative to ground station measurements, the statistical uncertainties are dominated by station-to-station variability. These consistencies between stations and between sensors limit the accuracy and the precision with which SBUV measurements can be validated. High altitude (> 20km) dust and aerosols injected by volcanoes can produce substantial error in the ozone profiles retrieved from SBUV data. Effects on total ozone are generally small (< 1%) except when large quantities of sulfur dioxide (> 1 m/atm-cm amounting to about 1000 tons of SO2 in the instruments field of view) are present in the gaseous form. Since major volcanoes can inject several mega-tons of SO2 into the atmosphere, it is evident that areas near a volcano, after a major eruption, can give falsely enhanced total ozone values. However, such effects are invariably short lived as SO2 is spread quickly by the prevailing wind, and is converted rapidly to sulfuric acid aerosols that do not absorb UV radiation. Stratospheric aerosol clouds can significantly enhance the back scattered radiation causing errors in the ozone vertical profile. Given the extreme spatial and temporal variability of the effects of volcanoes, it is currently not possible to design a retrieval algorithm to remove their effects from SBUV ozone data. It has, however, been possible to detect the presence of volcanic contamination in the instrument's field of view and flag the retrieved data. Two volcano checks have been implemented. One of these estimates the amount of SO2 present in the instrument's field of view and flags the data if total ozone is suspected to be in error by at least 5%. An index called the sulfur dioxide index (SOI) is also computed that provides a measurement (as yet, uncalibrated) of SO2 contamination. The other check is meant primarily for the detection of high level aerosols which affect SBUV ozone profiles. A volcano contamination index (VCI) is derived that measures the strength of this contamination. Although error analysis studies are still not complete, empirical evidence suggest that SBUV profiles which pass the check should have errors of no more than 5% between 7 and 40 mb. Above the altitude of 7 mb, effects of aerosol are generally negligible even when large quantities of aerosol are present in the lower altitudes. Therefore, SBUV profile data above 7 mb can be used even though they are flagged for volcano contamination. Similarly, total columnar ozone derived from SBUV are generally not in significant error even when large quantities of aerosols are present. Error Codes are provided in the PMF which can give indication as to potential problems with either total or profile ozone: Total Ozone: 0 - Low path length, good scan, 1 - High path length, good scan, 2 - Very high path, good scan, 3 - Spare, 4 - Inconsistency between best ozone and the largest weighted ozone pair, 5 - Difference between best ozone and total zone for profile greater than three sigma, 6 - Spare, 7 - Photometer reflectivity and monochrometer reflectivity differ by more than 0.15, 8 - Best reflectivity out of range (less than -0.05 or greater than 1.05), 9 - A-pair, B-pair or C-pair ozone exceeds the dynamic range of the tables. The dynamic ranges are: Latitude < 15 deg - 180-350 DU, Latitude 15-45 deg - 180-600 DU, Latitude > 45 deg - 180-650 DU. Profile Ozone: 0 - No error, 1 - Lower level anomaly, 2 - Inconsistency between best ozone and profile total ozone, 3 - Final residue greater than 3 sigma, 4 - Measured Q-value calculated with a priori profile and multiple-scattering/reflectivity correction, 5 - C greater than 3.0 DU or less than 0.5 DU, 6 - Sigma greater than 0.8 or less than 0.3, 7 - Reflectivity is less than -0.05, greater than 1.05, or changes by more than 0.05 from wavelength to wavelength, 8 - Total ozone not available or in-band stray light contamination, 9 - Bad radiance or eclipse contamination, 10 - 19 Same as above except in descending mode.
LOGICAL CONSISTENCY REPORT: TBD
COMPLETENESS REPORT: The SBUV/2 instrument can only measure ozone during daylight hours. In addition, there are times when various SBUV/2 instruments are put into special modes of data collection that prevent the retrieval of total and profile ozone.
HORIZONTAL POSITIONAL ACCURACY REPORT: SBUV/2 data is collected in 32 sec major frames. In discrete mode, the mode used for retrieval of total and profile ozone, a set of 12 measurements (1 for each discrete wavelength band) is taken every 32 seconds. Latitude and longitude values are provided in the data record at the beginning and end of each 32 second major frame. The instrument manufacturer (Ball) data books typically list SBUV/2 pointing errors from laboratory measurements of approximately 0.15 degrees in the X-direction, and 0.05 degrees or less in the Y-direction. This represents ~2 km or less at the surface. Uncertainties in satellite orientation and/or timing will add to this value.
VERTICAL POSITIONAL ACCURACY REPORT: Since SBUV/2 is a nadir-viewing instrument, it provides no inherent information about altitude, and therefore no estimate of vertical accuracy can be made. The vertical resolution is related to the nature of the retrieval algorithm. It is estimated that vertical resolution is at best about 6 km for a BUV type algorithm.
