Abstract:

The Irrigation maps are split into two section. The first set of maps are from the preliminary 1997 NRI data. The following set are from 1992 and earlier data. Both sets of maps deal with irrigation in croplands. Some of the irrigation systems and types depicted are pressure and gravity. The maps also look at the changes in irrigation areas. In general - When you click on an individual map, chart, or table on the subject index pages, you will get -- An "Explanation of Analysis," information that is essential to proper interpretation of the map. If you use our analysis products, please be aware of our disclaimer. A link to a downloadable Postscript file you can use to print a map. A link to the related state summary table. A link to the data file used to make the map. Data files are in pipe-delimited ASCII text format. The data file can be used with our GIS coverages to recreate the maps found on this site. Summary tables and data files are not available for all maps.

The National Resources Inventory covers non-federal land in the United States - some 75 percent of the country's land base - and is conducted every five years by the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service in cooperation with Iowa State University. It captures data from 800,000 statistically selected locations on land cover, land use, soil erosion, prime farmland soils, wetlands, habitat diversity, selected conservation practices, and other natural resource information. The information is statistically reliable for national, statewide, and multi-county use.
