Abstract:
-
The primary objective of "Fruit Breeding, Adaptability,
Production Techniques, and Cultural Practices" is to breed
strawberries and grapes for adaptability, quality, and disease
resistance; determine adaptability of various fruit cultivars;
study production techniques and cultural practices; evaluate
alternatives to methyl bromide as to effect on yield and quality
of fruit.

Collection Methodology: In an attempt to increase the number of
seed produced each year, crossing of strawberries and
germination of seed is being conducted in greenhouses during the
cooler months and in an air conditioned room during the hot
summer months; seedlings will be evaluated for anthracnose
resistance, quality, yield, and general adaptability. Grape
cultivars from around the country grown in large containers in a
screened house to help prevent vectors from spreading Pierce's
disease; crosses will be made and seedlings field tested in an
effort to develop a Vinifera type grape adaptable Louisiana
conditions.
