Abstract:
-
In 1989 a study to quantify the long-term response to various return intervals
of dormant- and growing- season prescription fires was installed on the
Hitchiti Experimental Forest in Jones Co. Georgia, about 20 miles NE of Macon.
The study is comprised of 6 treatments (2-yr winter line headfire, 3-yr winter
line headfire, 3-yr winter line backfire, 3-yr summer line backfire, 6-yr
summer line backfire, and unburned check) replicated 4 times in a randomized
block design. Each plot is roughly 2-acres in size. The plots were installed in
a 70-year old mixed pine/hardwood stand comprised primarily of loblolly (Pinus
taeda) and shortleaf (P. echinata) pines and various oaks (Quercus sp.) and
maples (Acer sp.). This study site would make an ideal demonstration area for
several reasons: 1) From a hazard reduction standpoint, the dramatic visual
differences among several treatments (including fire-free interval, season of
application, and firing technique) can be observed; 2) This is the only
long-term fire study I am aware of in this fuel type which is one of the
largest in the south, stretching from Virginia to Arkansas, and the only one in
the Piedmont physiographic region; 3) There is currently much interest in the
potential of prescribed fire to reduce hazardous fuels and improve biodiversity
in the Piedmont, yet the Native American practice of underburning has only been
operationally returned to the Piedmont for several decades and then generally
only on certain federal and state lands, so opportunities to see various
frequencies and seasons of burn are extremely limited and rarely occur together
on the same ownership and; 5) the site is within a? hour drive of Macon and
about an hour from Atlanta, the largest city in the South. I propose to sign
one replication of the plots along a paved road and design a permanent display
board for the site that contains a map of the study site, photographs, study
results, and a brief description of the role of fire in this ecosystem. A
full-color take-home fact sheet will also be provided. We will also develop
and maintain a web page describing this long-term study site. This study is
adjacent to a trailhead with parking facilities.
A study to quantify the long-term response to various return intervals of
dormant- and growing- season prescription fires in the Hitchiti Experimental
Forest in Jones County, Georgia.

Step 1: Overstory Tree Measurements
All trees larger than 4.5 inches DBH are measured periodically on two 0.2 acre
(1/5-acre) circular plots on each treatment plot. Plots are located at the
upper and lower slopes of the burn plot. The 1/5-acre plots are designated
as"Top Left" and"Bottom Right". On each 1/5-acre plot tree measurements taken
are: species, DBH, azimuth, distance, and damage. Total heights were measured
at the beginning of the study. At the beginning of the study trees were tagged
with numbered tags, but many of these tags have been lost due to tree growth
and other factors. The decision was made to use azimuth and distance to
identify the trees instead of retagging them.
