Seabirds are generally long-lived, and therefore life-history theory predicts personal survival will be prioritised over their current reproductive attempt. An understanding of how Little Auks balance reproduction and self-maintenance under variable environmental conditions is critical to the population modelling of this species, as variability in adult survival and fecundity will influence rates of population change.
From 2005, we estimated the survival rate and the reproductive success of adults little auks breeding at Kap Hoegh, East Greenland. Current reproductive success is assessed by measurement of hatching and fledging success, and indices of chick growth, the physiological condition of chicks and their fledging age.
