Abstract:

This program is dedicated to the study of key atmospheric species present in the lower troposphere at mid and high southern latitudes, these regions being still undisturbed by human activities. The present lack of atmospheric data in these regions, where it is still possible to examine the natural variability of the chemical composition of the atmosphere and its complexity, motivates this study. For instance, the project is focused on gaseous DMS emitted by the marine biota which by oxidation produces fine sulfur particles able to intercept solar radiations and thus to force the climate. Reversely, climatic conditions influence the state of the marine biota and a negative feedback would take place in response to the global warming.
This study is carried out by trapping gases and particles present in the atmosphere, some analysis such as the DMS one being necessary done at the site. Sampling of seawater during ship traverses and offshore stations are analyzed for DMSP to gain a better understanding of the oceanic source (satellite data being not always sufficient). Furthermore, a study of atmospheric oxidants who convert DMS into fine sulfur particles is carried out. These studies are achieved at DDU, Amsterdam and Crozet to provide a global view on mid and high latitude of the Austral Ocean. The observed interannual variations of the atmospheric chemistry are then compared to various environmental data (ocean colour, sea ice extend, state of the ozone layer, meteorological parameters) in view to understand the cause of their temporal variations. Such long term year-round data set will also permit to detect in the future a possible retroaction of the natural environment of this region to global climate change. Furthermore, such studies are stimulated by the study of glacier archives which open the possibility to reconstruct the past composition of the atmosphere, as far as the relation linking the composition of air and that of snow is enough known. Finally such king of studies has also recently been set up at the new over winter station located at 3000 asl on the high Antarctic plateau (Dome Concordia).
