Abstract:
-
The temperature, rainfall, and sunshine data resides in 1 book,
'Monthly Normals of Temperature, Rainfall, and Sunshine' (C/de 25
AO-95). The data contained in this book are tables and maps of monthly
and annual normals for surface temperature, rainfall, and sunshine for
the British Isles averaged over the period 1871 to 1910. Monthly and
annual variables incorporated in the tables are the following: mean
maximum, minimum, and mean temperature; number of days of rainfall,
sunshine, and humidity; mean maximum and minimum temperature; total
rainfall; temperature ranges; daily mean sunshine; and percent
possible sunshine. There are maps of monthly and annual mean maximum
and minimum temperature, rainfall, and monthly sunshine hours per day.
Hourly and 5-day weather data resides in 14 books, 'Quarterly Weather
Reports of the Meteorological Office' (C/de 25 AO-7). The data
contained in these books are tables, maps, and graphs of hourly,
five-day, and monthly surface pressure, temperature, rainfall, and
winds for the British Isles. These are for each month of the period
1869 to 1879. Some of the years contain daily weather maps of pressure
and wind. Hourly data include continuous traces of temperature,
pressure, and rainfall. These are displayed in the form of graphs
only. Daily parameters incorporated in these data are five-day means
of temperature and pressure, and records of gale force winds and their
duration for a particular speed. Monthly parameters include the
following: mean pressure and temperature; maximum and minimum pressure
and temperature; and number of hours during the month when strong
winds occurred.
Hourly and daily climate data resides in 12 books, 'Great Britain
Meteor. Office Met. Obs. at Stations of 2nd Order' (C/de 25
AO-3). The data contained in these books are tables of hourly
observations and daily and monthly surface climate data for the
British Isles. This information is for each year of the period 1875
to 1906. Parameters included in the hourly surface observations are
temperature, pressure, vapor pressure, humidity, cloudiness, and
winds. The only daily variables are maximum and minimum temperature.
Monthly parameters contained in these data are the following: mean
temperature, pressure, humidity, and cloudiness; 24 hour maximum
rainfall; rainfall and sunshine totals; wind direction frequency; and
days of rain, snow, hail, thunderstorms, clear skies, overcast skies,
and strong winds.
Hourly, daily, and annual surface data resides in 20 books, 'Hourly
Readings Obtained from the Self-Recording Instruments at Four
Observatories in Connexion with the Meteorological Office' (C/de 25
AO-1). The data contained in these books are tables of hourly, daily,
and annual surface weather for the British Isles. These data are for
each year of the period 1874 to 1907. Hourly readings were taken from
self-recording instruments at selected observatories in the British
Isles. Before 1884, the hourly readings were recorded at the Glasgow,
Stonyhurst, and Armagh observatories. After 1884, the readings came
from the observatories of Aberdeen, Falmouth, and Kew. The hourly
parameters included in these observations are pressure, winds,
temperature, sunshine, rainfall, vapor pressure, and relative
humidity. Daily variables included in these data are the following:
maximum and minimum pressure and temperature; sunshine hours;
rainfall; vapor pressure; and relative humidity. Annual parameters
incorporated in these data are: mean pressure, temperature, relative
humidity, and wind velocity for a particular hour of each year, and
averaged over the period; and hourly totals of rainfall and sunshine
for each year and averaged over the period.
Normals for climate events resides in 1 book, 'The Book of Normals of
Meteorological Elements for the British Isles' (C/de 25 AO-10). The
data contained in this book are tables and maps of daily, weekly,
monthly, and seasonal normals for various climate elements. These
elements are for the districts and cities in the British Isles
averaged over the period 1871 to 1921. Daily parameters included in
these data are normal sunshine, rainfall, and temperature. Weekly
parameters are maximum, minimum, and mean temperature, and length of
day of bright sunshine. Monthly variables incorporated in these data
are the following: mean temperature, rainfall, sunshine, and humidity;
mean maximum and minimum temperature; total rainfall; temperature
ranges; and number of days of rain, hail, thunder, snow, frost, and
snow cover. In addition, the years with the highest number of days of
snow, hail, and thunder, and the number of winters with a particular
number of snow days are tabulated. Seasonal parameters contained in
these data are mean, maximum, and minimum temperature. There are maps
of the following: daily normal sunshine, rainfall, and temperature;
monthly mean maximum and minimum temperature; monthly rainfall; and
monthly sunshine hours per day.
Surface pressure data resides in 1 book, 'Tables and Diagrams
Illustrating the Diurnal Range of Barometric Pressure in the British
Isles During the Years This book contains tables and graphs of hourly,
monthly, and yearly surface weather pressure data for England during
the years 1876-1880. The data include hourly observations of pressure,
monthly tables of mean pressure and range of pressure, yearly data of
mean pressure, and graphs of mean diurnal variation of the barometer
at various stations.
The precipitation data resides in 1 book, 'Rainfall Atlas of the
British Isles (1811-1834)' (C/de 75 Ra). In these summaries,
definitions are:
1) hourly/daily/monthly/seasonal/annual data - values determined for
each consecutive period, e.g., monthly temperature data: Jan 1900, Feb
1900, etc.
2. Long-term data - values determined over a period of years, e.g.,
long-term monthly temperature data using Jan 1900, Jan 1901, etc.
This book contains tables and maps of monthly and annual precipitation
data for the British Isles from 1811-1834. Tables contain the
following data: annual deviation from normal precipitation; long-term
annual mean precipitation; long-term annual absolute maximum and
minimum; and long-term annual range of precipitation. A map contains
the following data: annual absolute maximum and minimum precipitation;
and long-term monthly total precipitation.
Wind and precipitation data resides in 1 book, 'The System of the
Weather of the British Islands (1803-1824)' (C/de100 m15). In these
summaries, definitions are as in the above. This book contains tables
of quarterly and annual wind and precipitation data for Great Britain
from 1803 to 1824. Tables contain the following data: quarterly number
of days with wind direction from the following directions: N, NE, E,
SE, S, SW, W, NW; annual mean wind speed; annual deviation from normal
wind speed; and annual number of days with precipitation from the
following wind directions: N, NE, E, SE, S, SW, W, NW.
These books are part of the foreign meteorological data collection
held by the NOAA Central Library in Washington, DC. Information in
this collection dates back to the 18th century for daily, monthly,
seasonal, and annual tabular summaries, and the 19th century for
weather maps. These data are the result of foreign exchange
agreements, but the collection has not been updated since 1983.
