Abstract:
PATACHE: Title: Monitoring of the Structure of Phytoplankton Community in Collahuasi's Mining Project at Port Area in Punta Patache, Chile. Project funded by the mining company Doña Inés de Collahuasi. A baseline evaluation was surveyed on the phytoplankton community structure. This evaluation defines potential effects from human activities made in the mining project Collahuasi at Punta Patache. As a result, the study found a similar community structure as described for other coastal zones analyses. The diatom group influenced by similar conditions of upwelling is the highest in terms of biomass, abundance, and species composition. Conversely, the variability of the upwelling defines the direction in succession of the phytoplankton analyzed through different time series. However this study distinguished between natural and cultural forces in the diatom spatio-temporal variation. Now, decision-makers have a better understanding of potential changes which emerges from anthropogenic actions. CHIPANA 2003: Interim project DI05-03 (Project funded by the Research Division at Universidad Arturo Prat, Chile). Title: Mesoscale variability in the structure and function of Engraulis ringens. An analysis of physical and chemical attributes was carried out in the adjacent zone of Loa River (21°15'S - 21°21'S). This analysis showed physiochemical variability catalyzing processes of fertilization in maximum reproductive stages of Engraulis ringens. Likewise, the nutrients concentration and food supply were effected in a spawning area. In accordance with the natural history of this species, the sampled analyzed the reproductive habitat on eggs and larval retention, as well as the driven forces in the Loa River at the first stage of development. Based on the previous sampling, a physiochemical characterization was implemented in order to unveil circulation patterns, wind variation, and intensity of outcrop process. In addition, Spatio-temporal fluctuations on phytoplankton and zooplankton were tested only under physical properties. These dynamics indicated positive effects on biomass and abundance in different fractions of size. Moreover, an ichthyoplankton survey should be undergone in order to determine whether or not this area is suitable for spawning and breeding conditions of Engraulis ringens. CHIPANA 2004-2005: Interim project No. DIF22/04 (Financed by the Research Division at the University Arturo Prat, Chile). Title: Follow-up and bio-oceanographic evaluation at early stages of spawning on Engraulis ringens population in Chipana Bay, Chile (21°20'S). Monthly data collected from food quality and quantity in 2003 surveys, calls for an environmental monitoring follow-up. This program seeks to understand larval conditions on both retention and high concentrations in the Loa River. Sampling points were set at one, three and five minutes of the coastline. In doing this, the data collection obtained vertical profiles of temperature and salinity as well as water's chemistry and species composition. Hence, this shows how oxygen dissolved and nutrients are corelated among species composition, abundance and biomass. The latter emphasize on fractions of autotrophic and heterotrophic nutrition as building blocks. This will supply food for larval growth of Engraulis ringens commonly known as anchoveta. SPANISH PATACHE: Proyecto Financiado por la empresa minera Doña Inés de Collahuasi. Título: Caracterización de la estructura de la comunidad fitoplanctónica presente en la zona del área del puerto, proyecto minero Collahuasi. Resumen: Los estudios relacionados con la caracterización de la comunidad fitoplanctónica en el sector de Patache comenzaron con la elaboración de una línea base para evaluar el posible impacto que causarían en el sistema las actividades involucradas en el Proyecto Collahuasi. Los resultados permitieron detectar una estructura comunitaria similar a la descrita para otras zonas costeras. Además, se detectó una composición de especies, abundancia y biomasa, típica de un fitoplancton de sistemas influenciados por eventos de surgencia, donde el grupo dominante es el de las diatomeas. La variabilidad de la surgencia rige significativamente el comportamiento sucesional del fitoplancton, lo que se ve reflejado durante las distintas épocas analizadas. En base de lo anterior, el conocimiento de las fluctuaciones del fitoplancton en el tiempo y espacialmente, es fundamental para entender los posibles cambios que puede sufrir por acción antropogénica. La ejecución de monitoreos permite así establecer las variaciones "normales o no" que pudiese sufrir este complejo grupo. CHIPANA 2003: Proyecto Interno DI05-03 (Financiado por la Dirección de Investigación de la Universidad Arturo Prat). Título: Variabilidad a mesoescala de la estructura física y química que modula los procesos de fertilización, concentración y disponibilidad de alimento en un área de desove de Engraulis ringens (21°15' S - 21°21' S) durante el periodo máximo reproductivo. Resumen: Considerando los antecedentes acerca de la zona adyacente al río Loa, como un área de retención de huevos y larvas de Engraulis ringens, el presente proyecto pretende analizar este hábitat reproductivo en función de los factores que lo distinguirían como favorable para el desarrollo de los primeros estadios de esta especie. Sobre la base de lo anterior se caracterizarán los patrones de circulación de la zona y la estructura física y química asociada a la variabilidad de los vientos y a la intensidad de los procesos de afloramiento. Se evaluará la respuesta del fitoplancton y zooplancton al escenario físico imperante, a través de la medición de las fluctuaciones espacio-temporales que experimenten sus abundancias y biomasas en sus diferentes fracciones de tamaño. Con la información disponible se analizará la estructura de la componente ictioplanctónica estableciendo si se cumplen las condiciones adecuadas que determinan esta zona como área de desove y crianza en función de la triada de factores. CHIPANA 2004-2005: Proyecto Interno DIF22/04 (Financiado por la Dirección de Investigación de la Universidad Arturo Prat). Título: Programa de seguimiento y evaluación de las condiciones bioceanográficas y estadios tempranos de Engraulis ringens en una de las principales áreas de desove del norte de Chile: Bahía Chipana (21º 20' S). Resumen: Sobre la base de la información obtenida durante 2003 se plantea un programa de monitoreo de las condiciones ambientales que favorecen la presencia y alta concentración de larvas en la zona del río Loa, en función de la calidad y cantidad del alimento. Se llevarán a cabo muestreos mensuales en tres estaciones (1, 3 y 5 mn de la costa) donde se obtendrán perfiles verticales de temperatura y salinidad. Además, se caracterizará la estructura química y biológica de la columna de agua, a través de las mediciones de oxígeno disuelto y nutrientes, y la composición y abundancia y biomasa de fracciones autotróficas y heterotróficas, poniendo énfasis en todas las formas que constituyen ítem alimenticios para las larvas de anchoveta.
