Description:
Abstract:
Infectious pancreatic necrosis virus (IPNV) is an important fish pathogen that
can cause high levels of mortality particularly in intensively cultured fish.
The virus can infect various life stages of salmonid and nonsalmonid fishes,
and fish that survive primary infection can be lifelong carriers of the virus.
IPNV can be readily transmitted between generations and among contemporary
generations. Empirical and experimental evidence indicate that species
susceptibility is greatest in brook trout, followed respectively by rainbow
trout, brown trout, lake trout, and Atlantic salmon. Little is known about
strain susceptibility within a species. Brook trout are intensively cultured by
the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission (PFBC) and the agency has been
developing for about 15 years an IPNV resistant strain of brook trout known as
the Benner Spring Select. The basis for selection has focused on mating of
virus-free parents.
