Abstract:
The Coastal Ocean Processes Experiment (COPE) was a major experiment performed off the Oregon Coast in September and October 1995 to examine the use of radars to remotely sense the surface expressions of internal waves. Several radars viewed the sea surface from land, a CODAR system measured currents, several moorings were deployed to measure internal waves as they propagated towards shore, and a ship was used to perform CTD and ADCP measurements. In addition, R/P Flip was moored offshore with a wide variety of in situ and remote sensors, and several aircraft and a blimp were used as platforms for making radar measurements. NOAA Environmental Technology Laboratory (ETL) was the lead organization for this experiment. Other institutions who participated in the experiments were Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (JHU/APL), Naval Postgraduate School (NPS), University of Washington Applied Physics Laboratory (UW/APL), Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI), Institute of Ocean Sciences (IOS of Fisheries and Oceans Canada), and University of Colorado.
