Abstract:

The goal of this project is to use the isotopic composition of sulfate and nitrate in the WAIS Divide core to help place better constraints on the oxidant composition of the pre-industrial atmosphere. An important premise is that the combined use of multiple isotope ratios, which have different sensitivities, will place stronger constraints on paleoxidants than a single ratio could provide. Our findings confirm this, and provide the new constraints on pre-industrial/modern oxidants at high southern latitudes. This data set contains ice core measurements of multiple isotopes of sulfate. The ice cores were drilled at the West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS) Divide site between 2005 and 2007. The initial sulfate measurements (analyzed in 2009) average 12 meters from the 70 meter, 2005A core(79 28.1’S 112 5.2’W) and span the preindustrial-industrial transition (late 1700s to 2005. Measurements from the WAIS 2006A 588 meters deep core (analyzed in 2010) are 10-15 meter averages, and span 2300 years.
