Title: Examination of the Buckeye Tillite formation, the trace fossils within the Devonian Horlick formation and the Permian Coal Measure in the Ohio Range of the Horlick Mountains

Abstract:
-
A second season of field work was undertaken in the Ohio Range of the Horlick Mountains as a three fold geological study to complete the stratigraphy of the area. This included an analysis of the abundant trace fossils of the Devonian Horlick Formation, a detailed assessment of the glacial Buckeye Formation and post-glacial Discovery Ridge Formation, and a study of the very thick overlying Permian Coal Measures. The Mount Glossopteris coal measures were studied on Mercer and Terrace Ridges of Mount Schopf and the Canyon Peak area from a camp on Terrace Ridge. Coal measures were also studied on Mount Glossopteris and Quartz Pebble Hill from the upper Discovery Ridge camp, as well as the Discovery Ridge Formation lower in these sequences. The party worked along the whole of the escarpment using other camps, and by sledging round the western end of the range, the group got easier access to the Horlick Formation on Discovery Ridge and a spur further east. Recollection of lithofacies in the Horlick Formation was carried out for thin section analysis to test certain deductions from previous sampling. Several new sections in the Horlick formation were measured. Fine grained samples from the Buckeye Formation and the Discovery Ridge Formation were collected for pollen analysis. The coal petrology of the Mt Glossopteris Formation was determined. A detailed analysis was undertaken on the Trace fossils were widely photographed and collected wherever possible for further study. Numerous well preserved and very large Glossopteris leaves were collected for future research.

Canterbury Museum holds over 2000 rock specimens from Antarctica. Most of these represent the lithologies of the Beacon Supergroup of rocks and were collected during several NZARP events over a number of seasons in the 1970s and 1980s. The collections were made at a number of sites in the Transantarctic Mountains of Victoria Land. In addition, small collections were made at Cape Adare and Cape Hallett.
Collected at the same time were fossils (in excess of 1200 specimens) of a variety of ages, but mostly Devonian (416-359 Ma), Permian (299-251 Ma) and Triassic (251-199 Ma). Represented among the fossils are plants, invertebrates (mostly arthropods, molluscs and brachiopods) and vertebrates (fish).
In the collections Antarctic rock have catalogue numbers with the prefix RA; fossils have the prefix AF. Rock samples and fossils specific to this expedition include:
Rocks RA1028-2060 from Ohio Range (Discovery Ridge, Lackey Ridge, Darling Ridge, Mt Schopf)
Fossils AF756-1092 Permian plants and invertebrates from Mt Schopf; Mt Glossopteris Devonian fish and invertebrates from Lackey Ridge
