Abstract:
The CORDLink digital library project includes representatives from the western regional offices of the Geological Survey of Canada, the British Columbia Geological Survey, Yukon Geoscience Office, University of British Columbia Earth and Ocean Science Department and is in collaboration with the North American Geologic Data Model Working Group to establish a framework for managing multi-variant (map, text and image) geoscience information and knowledge resources in a distributed network environment. Its objective is to develop the prototype for an internet-based digital library system to seamlessly integrate digital map, image and text-based information on the geology of the Canadian Cordillera. The project is part of a larger initiative, the Canadian Geoscience Knowledge Network (CGKN), a project sponsored by Ressources GSC to make Canadian geoscience knowledge more accessible by creating an internet-based network of geoscience information sources comprising the federal and provincial geological surveys, universities and other partners. The testbed system represents, in our view, a critical step in establishing the necessary framework for building a distributed, internet-based digital library system that is self-sustaining, both at the regional and national level.To develop, prototype, and test an internet-based digital library framework to integrate and manage multi-variant (map, text and image) geoscience information and knowledge resources for the western region of Canada.
