Abstract:
ENGLISH The project is aimed at enhanced knowledge of the present morphology and structure of Antarctic permafrost and the interpretation of the permafrost evolution and the cryogenic processes and phenomena revealed in certain periglacial conditions in the Antarctic Peninsula under climate and glacial changes. These are some of the few sites in Antarctica where ice-free territory exists with the presence of frozen quaternary deposits on the permafrost continuous zone. Beginning with the early Holocene, the climatic conditions were favourable for the existence of permafrost, if the surface is not covered by glaciers. The development of the Antarctic permafrost on the ice-free areas, the dynamics of the geocryogenic processes and the ice ground formation are conditioned by climatic parameters and different ground types related with surface hydrographic systems and phreatic aquifer on the periglacial zone. According to conditions of Quaternary history permafrost is divided into two cryoformations: epigenetic and syngenetic. Each unit was characterized by different cryogenic processes, formation of ground ice in the permafrost and active layer, conditions of bedding and occurrence of buried constitutional ground ice types. The different climatic conditions determine the cryogenic asymmetry of the Antarctic Peninsula with respect to the continuous permafrost on the north-east side and the discontinuous permafrost on the west sector. At present all regions of Antarctic Peninsula has been subject to a significant atmospheric warming, with 2.5 ?C on the eastern and northern parts and also 4 ?C on the western part over the last 50 years. SPANISH Este proyecto se propone ampliar el conocimiento de la morfolog?a en la estructura del permafrost en Ant?rtica. Se busca realizar una interpretaci?n posible de la evoluci?n de los procesos criog?nicos en ?reas periglaciares bajo las nuevas circunstancias de cambio clim?tico en la Pen?nsula Ant?rtica. Esta ?ltima constituye una de los pocos sitios del continente ant?rtico con ?reas libres de hielo y dep?sitos cuaternarios zonas de permafrost continuo. A partir del Holoceno inferior las condiciones clim?ticas fueron favorables para el desarrollo del permafrost en ?reas donde la superficie no se encuentra cubierta de glaciares. El desarrollo del permafrost en Ant?rtica sobre las zonas libres de hielo, la din?mica de los procesos geocriol?gicos y la formaci?n de hielos enterrados esta condicionada por los par?metros clim?ticos y los diferentes tipos de sustrato en relaci?n con los sistemas hidrol?gicos e hidrogeol?gicos en las zonas periglaciales. En funci?n de las caracter?sticas de la evoluci?n del permafrost en el cuartario puede dividirse en dos crioformaciones: epigen?tico y singen?tico. Cada unidad esta caracterizada por diferentes procesos criol?gicos relacionados con la formaci?n de hielo en el permafrost, el desarrollo de la capa activa y/o las condiciones de ocurrencia de diferente tipo de hielo en el subsuelo. Las diferentes condiciones clim?ticas determinan la asimetr?a criog?nica en la Pen?nsula Ant?rtica con respecto a las ?reas de permafrost continuo en el norte y el este y discontinuo en el oeste. Hasta el presente y desde los ?ltimos 50 a?os toda la regi?n norte de la Pen?nsula ant?rtica ha estado sujeta a un calentamiento atmosf?rico significativo de 2,5?C en la regi?n este y norte y mas de de 4?C en el oeste de la misma.
