Abstract:
-
The OMI/Aura Level-3 Global Gridded (0.25x0.25 deg) Nitrogen Dioxide Product "OMNO2e" released in early 2012, has been replaced with new OMI Level-3 NO2 product "ONMO2d"(http://disc.gsfc.nasa.gov/Aura/OMI/documents/v003/omno2d_v003.shtml ). OMNO2d product is based on new algorithm and is recently released (Jan 13, 2013) and made available to public from the NASA Goddard Earth Sciences Data and Information Services Center(GES DISC). The OMNO2 (Level-2) and OMNO2G (Level-2G, binned) products re-processed using new algorithm and released July 2012, are also available from the GES DISC. see http://disc.sci.gsfc.nasa.gov/Aura/data-holdings/OMI/
Nitrogen dioxide is an important chemical species in both, the stratosphere where it plays a key role in ozone chemistry, and in the troposphere where it is a precursor to ozone production. In the troposphere, it is produced in various combustion processes and in lightning and is an indicator of poor air quality.
The algorithm leads for the NO2 products are NASA OMI scientist Dr. Nickolay Krotkov and KNMI scientist Dr. Pepijn Veefkind.
OMNO2d and OMNO2e data products are both Level-3 Gridded Products at 0.25x0.25 deg resolution. OMNO2d product contains pixel level data of good quality that are binned and "averaged" into 0.25x0.25 degree global grids. New OMNO2e product (planned to be released late 2013), will contain only one "best" pixel, selected from all "good" observations that occupy a 0.25x0.25 deg grid cell. This product will also contain Total column NO2 and Total Tropospheric Column NO2, for all atmospheric conditions, and for sky conditions where cloud fraction is less than 30 percent. More details will be made available at the time of new OMNO2e data release.
OMNO2e data will be stored in EOS Hierarchical Data Format (HDF-EOS) just like the current OMNO2d. Each file will contain data from the day lit portion of the orbit (~14 orbits).
A list of tools for browsing and extracting subset of data data from these files can be found at: http://disc.gsfc.nasa.gov/Aura/tools.shtml
The GES DISC has developed an on-line web-based interactive tool called Giovanni (http://giovanni.gsfc.nasa.gov/) which provides web based capabilities to browse and explore OMI NO2 data.
The OMI along with other atmospheric chemistry sensors, flown on NASA Aura satellite are tracking important atmospheric pollutants from space since its launch in July, 2004. The Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI), one of the four Aura satellite sensors with its 2600 km viewing swath width provides daily global measurements of four important US Environmental Protection Agency criteria pollutants (Tropospheric ozone, Nitrogen dioxide, Sulfur dioxide and Aerosols from biomass burning and industrial emissions,HCHO, BrO, OClO and surface UV irradiance. OMI is a contribution of the Netherlands Agency for Aerospace Programs (NIVR)in collaboration with Finish Meterological Institute (FMI), to the US EOS-Aura Mission. The principal investigator (Dr. Pieternel Levelt) institute is the KNMI (Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute).
