Abstract:
As part of the Coastal Mixing and Optics (CMO) program, Fisheries and Oceans
Canada deployed an EPSONDE instrument on the New England Continental Shelf for
two weeks in September 1996 and two weeks in July/August 1997. EPSONDE is used
to make profiles of turbulence in the ocean mixed layer. By measuring the
temperature and velocity microstructure of the water, one can infer rates of
vertical diffusion of heat and mass in the ocean. These rates are important to
understanding mixing in the ocean.
The study site was located 80 miles southeast of Montauk, Long Island,
and 60 miles south of Martha's Vineyard. Drogue drifters were also deployed and
conductivity, temperature and depth (CTD) measurements were taken.
The web site of the Coastal Mixing and Optics (CMO) project at the
Bedford Institute of Oceanography is maintained for the use of participants in
the Office of Naval Research (ONR)-sponsored CMO program. The contents of the
site include raw data and preliminary analyses which, pending publication, are
considered proprietary by the program participants. The availability of these
data and analyses on the web site does not imply permission for anyone outside
the program to use these data. Permission must be obtained from the ONR and the
individual investigator before anyone uses these data for research purposes
outside the scope of the CMO program. The overall objective of the research was
to determine how particles and optical properties respond to physical forcing
under various oceanic conditions on a broad continental shelf off the eastern
coast of the Unites States.
