Project: LATE CRETACEOUS PALEOGENE > Biogeographic relationships between northern Antarctic Peninsula and southernmost South America during the Late Cretaceous-Paleogene. Project No.12 2002 -2004 ENGLISH The aim of this project is to contribute to the geological and paleontological knowledge of the Late Cretaceous-Paleogene sedimentary units of the James Ross (Antarctic Peninsula) and Austral (South America) basins in order to compare the geological and biological evolution of these two areas. Late Cretaceous-Paleogene richly fossiliferous sedimentary rocks are presently exposed at both sides of the Drake Passage in the James Ross Basin (Antarctica) and Austral or Magallanes Basin (South America). The physical link between Antarctic Peninsula and Patagonia, at least from Cretaceous to Eocene times, has been fully proved and therefore these basins must have been adjacent one to the other. Therefore the comparative study of these basins is very important to understand not only the geological evolution of the area but also the composition and evolution of the fauna and flora of these southern high latitude areas. This knowledge will also help to understand the origin and evolution of modern fauna and flora in southern continents. In the James Ross Archipelago (James Ross Basin) superb exposures of fossiliferous marine sedimentary rocks record the events from Coniacian up to Eocene times in the northern Antarctic Peninsula. Glacimarine and volcanic deposits represent Neogene glacial and volcanics events. At the same time, in southernmost South America, an important time-equivalent sedimentary sequence accumulated in the Austral Basin and crops out in southern Santa Cruz and Tierra del Fuego provinces. SPANISH Relaciones Biogeograficas entre el extremo norte de la Peninsula Antartica y el extremo austral sudamericano durante el Cretacico Superior-Paleogeno La union fisica entre la Peninsula Antartica y Patagonia desde al menos el Cretacico hasta el Eoceno ha quedado plenamente probada y ahora se especula sobre los acontecimientos que llevaron a su separacion y condujeron a las placas a su distribucion actual (Cunningham et al., 1995). Por lo tanto, mientras que en el extremo norte de la Peninsula Antartica (Cuenca James Ross) se depositaban las unidades actualmente aflorantes en la islas Marambio, en el NW de la isla James Ross y Vega, (vease una sintesis en Elliot, 1988 en Feldmann y Woodburne, 1988), en el extremo sur de Sudamerica tenian lugar eventos geologicos que han quedado registrados, junto con sus fosiles, en las sedimentitas del Cretacico Superior-Paleogeno de la Cuenca Austral (Biddle et al., 1986; Macellari et al., 1989). Es por ello que el estudio de estas ultimas y su comparacion con Antartida es de gran importancia para conocer no solo la evolucion geologica de toda esta vasta region, sino tambien la composicion y evolucion de la fauna y flora de esos mares y tierras australes y comprender su rol en el desarrollo de las faunas y floras modernas de todo el Hemisferio Sur. En las islas Marambio, Vega y James Ross, rocas sedimentarias mayormente de origen marino, muy fosiliferas, registran los acontecimientos ocurridos en el norte de la Peninsula Antartica durante el lapso Coniaciano-Eoceno (Cuenca James Ross). Depositos glacimarinos y vulcanitas neogenas representan los eventos magmaticos y glacigenicos mis recientes (Rinaldi et al., 1978; Feldmann y Woodburne, 1988; Marenssi et al., 1998a). En el extremo austral sudamericano una extensa secuencia sedimentaria representa el relleno de la Cuenca Austral. Rocas equivalentes en edad a las aflorantes en la isla Marambio, Vega y noroeste de la isla James Ross (y aun mas antiguas), se hallan en las provincias de Santa Cruz y Tierra del Fuego (Macellari et al., 1989; Malumian y Carames, 1997; Olivero y Malumian, 1999, entre otros). En consecuencia, este proyecto pretende acrecentar el conocimiento de la estratigrafia, sedimentologia y paleontologia de las diferentes unidades del Cretacico Superior-Paleogeno de la Cuenca James Ross (Antartica) y su comparacion con aquellas coetaneas de la Cuenca Austral (Patagonia). Especificamente, se pretende cristalizar las investigaciones que el grupo ha venido realizando en los ultimos anos, produciendo un mapa geologico de la isla Marambio de resolucion acorde con la base topografica disponible (1:10000 equidistancia 5 m).
