Description:
Abstract:
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) Climate Monitoring and Diagnostics Laboratory (CMDL)/Halocarbons and other Trace Species Group (HATS) is currently measuring halons in the atmosphere. Measurements of Halon-1211 and -1301 are measured by electron-capture gas chromatography (ECGC) and gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GCMS). H-1301 (bromotrifluoromethane or CBrF3) is detected by only ECGC while H-1211 (bromodichloromethane or CBrClF2) is measured by both methods. Flask samples of air from the HATS network are analyzed on a bi-monthly or monthly basis; other flasks are collected on research cruises: SAGA II (1989) and SAGA III (1990): Soviet/American Gas and Aerosol RITS 89 (1989): Radiatively Important Trace Species BLAST I (1994), BLAST II (1994), BLAST III (1996): Bromine Latitudinal Air/Sea Transect OAXTC (1992): Ocean/Atmosphere Exchange of Trace Compounds Stations in the HATS network measuring halons are: ALT: Alert, Northwest Territories, Canada BRW: Point Barrow, Alaska, USA NWR: Niwot Ridge, Colorado, USA MLO: Mauna Loa, Hawaii, USA SMO: Cape Matatula, American Samoa CGO: Cape Grim, Tasmania, Australia SPO: South Pole Station, USA Principal investigators for the halon flask measurements are: J. Butler, S. Montzka, and J. Elkins (NOAA/CMDL) The NOAA/CMDL data are available via anonymous ftp as follows: "ftp://ftp.cmdl.noaa.gov/hats/halons" For more detailed information on NOAH projects and data see: "http://www.cmdl.noaa.gov/hats/"
