Abstract:
DATA ACCESS The NASA/TOGA COARE Data Archive http://daac.gsfc.nasa.gov/fieldexp/TOGA/ The DADS data are archived at the NASA GSFC DAAC and are available via FTP using the URL ftp://disc1.gsfc.nasa.gov/data/toga_coare/aircraft/nasa_dc8/dads BACKGROUND TOGA COARE was a multidisciplinary, international research effort that investigated the scientific phenomena associated with the interaction between the atmosphere and the ocean in the warm pool region of the western Pacific. The field experiment phase of the program took place from 1 November 1992 through 28 February 1993 and involved the deployment of oceanographic ships and buoys, several ship and land based Doppler radars, multiple low and high level aircraft equipped with Doppler radar and other airborne sensors, as well as a variety of surface based instruments for in situ observations. The NASA component of TOGA COARE, while contributing directly to overall COARE objectives, emphasized scientific objectives associated with the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) and NASA's cloud and radiation program. GENERAL INFORMATION The DADS dataset contains DC-8 aircraft house-keeping data for flights that took place in the Intensive Observing Period of TOGA-COARE. The DC-8 DADS records and transfers over 50 parameters to experiment computers in ASCII-format at 1-second intervals. The data transmission is in one direction only to protect the main system from defective experimental equipment or shorting of output lines. DADS data are normally generated and recorded from soon after takeoff until shortly after landing. DATA INFORMATION The DADS dataset, stored at the NASA DAAC on the anonymous FTP site. It is 60 MB in volume with a typical file size of 3 MB for the compressed data from one flight, and a typical file size of 10 MB for the 1-second ascii data from one flight, when uncompressed. In the main directory ./ the files are: README : similar to this file flightfmt : Formats of 10-second flight navigation data files (text) DADSparams.ps.Z : Description of the DADS parameters (PostScript) DADSformat.ps.Z : Format of the 1-second ASCII data files (PostScript) In a sub-directory ./9301XX the files are: dc8_data.asc.Z : The full DADS ASCII 9600/19.2K baud serial dataset 9301XX.chk : Data analysis report for file dc8_data.asc. md_log : The in-flight Mission Director's comment log. 9301XX.gif : A representative NOAA APT weather picture, captured during or before each flight (Townsville local flights only). dc8_data.bfl : 10-second flight data file for use by NASA Ames Airborne Science Program track-mapping software on PCs. dc8_data.flt : 10-second flight data file for use by NASA Ames Airborne Science Program track-mapping software on UNIX systems. map1.ps.Z : PostScript track plot of the entire flight. map2.ps.Z : Same as map1.ps, with wind barbs. map3.ps.Z, : More track plots, showing any data lines or areas of map4.ps.Z... interest at a smaller scale and higher map resolution. Number of these varies for each flight. plots.ps.Z : PostScript plots of various DADS parameters vs. UT. The DADS 1-second data files: The 1-second data, contained in the dc8_data.asc files are written in an ascii compression format that requires interpretation. A table describing the format of the data files is in PostScript file DADSformat.ps. Descriptions of data parameters are contained in PostScript file DADSparams.ps. Both of these files reside in file f1_dat.tar. File coord_flt_legs: This file, compiled by Ed Zipser, contains a list of DC-8 legs that were near-simultaneous in coverage with the ER-2, turboprops or both. Read and Display Software: The DAAC distributes the following software with the DADS data: - extdads1.f: Fortran77 program extracts 19 selected data parameters from the file dc8_data.asc (1-second DADS data) and outputs them in character format to file dads1. - extdads2.f: Fortran77 program converts the values in dads1. to their proper units and outputs them as reals to file dads. - extmach1.f: Fortran77 program extracts a (different) group of data parameters from file dc8_data.asc and outputs them in character format to file mach1. - extmach2.f: Fortran77 program converts the values in mach1. to their proper units and outputs them as reals to file mach..
