Title: Physiology of Arthropods (Collembola) at Cape Hallett
-
Description:
-
-
Abstract:
-
Environmental physiology of three species of springtails (Hexapoda:
Collembola): (1) Isotoma klovstadi (Isotomidae), (2) Cryptopygus cisantarcticus
(Isotomidae) and (3) Friesia grisea (Neanuridae). We measured supercooling
points, diurnal shifts in supercooling points, cold tolerance, critical thermal
minima and maxima, tolerance to desiccation and haemolymph osmolality for all
three species, as well as total proteins, responses to and recovery from
desiccation, osmoregulatory ability, heat and cold shock responses and fine
scale spatial variation in physiology of Isotoma klovstadi.

Collected specimens are lodged at Iziko South African Museum in Cape Town, South Africa. The collection consists of mounted slides and ethanol preserved specimens. All were labelled correctly and were accompanied with a full itemised description of the collection.
For each transect survey, the data collected includes: GPS co-ordinates of transect, date of sampling, transect number, unit, mounting code, distance, species collected and how many. The museum have not yet allocated accession numbers. For more information regarding these samples, please contact:
