Nansen Environmental and Remote Sensing Center (NERSC) is an independent
non-profit environmental research institute affiliated with the University of
Bergen, Norway. The institute was founded in 1987 by scientists from the
maritime remote sensing group of the Geophysical Institute, University of

The major goal of NERSC is to perform multi-disciplinary research with emphasis
on remote sensing and numerical modelling of both the marine and terrestrial
environment. Scientists at NERSC are engaged in a wide range of studies in the
fields of sea ice, physical and biological oceanography, coastal management,
climatology, meteorology, marine geodesy, geology and botany. International
collaboration is essential and has been established through scientific
cooperation and field campaigns. The core staff of NERSC have had the major
role in the planning and execution of the Marginal Ice Zone Experiments (MIZEX
in 1983, '84, '87), which took place in the marginal ice zone in the Greenland
and Barents Seas.

For ERS-1 sensor validation and applications, NERSC is running two major ESA
approved projects - the Norwegian Continental Shelf Experiment (NORCSEX) and
the Seasonal Ice Zone Experiment (SIZEX). Pre-launch campaigns have been
executed in 1988 for NORCSEX and in 1989 for SIZEX, and post-launch campaigns
are scheduled for 1991 on the Norwegian Continental Shelf and in the Barents
and Greenland Seas in 1992, respectively.

NERSC staff are principal investigators on the NIMBUS-7 SMMR team, ERS-1,
Topex/Poseidon and EOS satellite projects and in the remote sensing and
modelling part of the European Imaging Spectroscopy Airborne Campaign
(EISAC'89), the Nordic contribution to World Ocean Circulation Experiment
(Nordic WOCE), European Program on Climatology and Natural Hazards (EPOCH)-
'Climate of the 21st Century' and International Space Year '92.

Remote sensing for land applications are an expanding field at the institute.
Studies in the fields of geodesy, geology, and botany with applications in
European areas as well as developing countries have been performed.

NERSC is responsible for the teaching of graduate and undergraduate courses in
remote sensing at the University of Bergen. The institute also prepares short
courses in remote sensing applications and techniques. In November 1990, NERSC
had 15 full time scientists, 3 associate professors (at the University of
Bergen), 5 students pursuing doctoral research projects, 10 graduate students
and 4 administrative staff.

Ordering / Price Policy:
The data from the campaigns conducted by NERSC consist of both space (NOAA
AVHRR, SMMR, SSM/I, Geosat, Seasat, SPOT and Landsat) and airborne (Synthetic
Aperture Radar (SAR) and spectrometer) remote sensing data, as well as
extensive microwave and physical, chemical and biological field measurements
and observations. As a research institute NERSC has not established a
dedicated data distribution service and agreements for the supply of data are
made upon request.
