The Institut de Ci'ncias del Mar (ICM, Institute of Marine Sciences) was founded in 1951 as the Institute of Fisheries Research. It belongs to the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Cient'ficas (CSIC), within its natural resources area. Its main objective is the multidisciplinary study of the sea, through research projects focusing on different aspects of the marine environments and ecosystems.
The ICM has a public library with ca. 5000 volumes that keeps growing and is currently receiving 488 scientific periodicals, all of it about marine sciences. It also maintains a valuable Biological Reference Collection of fishes and crustaceans from around the world and especially from the Mediterranean.
The Research Vessel and Polar Facilities Management Unit (UGBOIP) takes care of the operations of the "R/V Garc'a del Cid" of the CSIC, the management and maintenance of the scientific instruments of the "R/V Hesperides" run by the Spanish Navy, and the Spanish Antarctic Base "Juan Carlos I".
