Satellite Situation Center, National Space Science Data Center, Space Science Data Operation Office, Goddard Space Flight Center, NASA

Data Center Description
The Satellite Situation Center (SSC) is an operational element of the
National Space Science Data Center (NSSDC) and World Data Center for
Satellite Information (WDC/SI) at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center
in Greenbelt, Maryland. The SSC is further supported by software
development staff in the Space Physics Data Facility at NASA
Goddard. SSC routinely compiles, maintains and distributes information
from a data base of satellite orbital elements and cartesian
coordinates for space science satellites from launch reports issued by
United States Space Command (USSPACECOM) and other U.S. and foreign
agencies dessiminating satellite launch information. Related support
services are provided to space science program offices, flight
projects and individual investigators. Support is provided through
NSSDC for domestic users and through WDC/SI for international
users. Monthly reports on new satellite launches are published for the
international Committee on Space Research (COSPAR) in the SPACEWARN

On-line versions of the SPACEWARN Bulletin and information on orbital
elements and heliocentric coordinates for active space science
satellites are available (

The software and associated database of Satellite Situation Center Web
(SSCWeb) together form a system to cast geocentric spacecraft location
information into a framework of (empirical) geophysical regions and
mappings of spacecraft locations along lines of the Earth's magnetic
field. This capability is one key to mission science planning (both
single missions and coordinated observations of multiple spacecraft
with ground-based investigations) and to subsequent multi-mission data
analysis. This system directly supports the operational SSC and ISTP's
Science Planning and Operations Facility (SPOF).
