Initiated by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Interagency Monitoring of Protected Visual Environments(IMPROVE) ambient monitoring network was formed to monitor Federal Class I Areas ... visibility at 20 locations. Now, the network has expanded to almost 110 sites. IMPROVE's goals are as follow:

- Establish current visibility and aerosol conditions in FCIA

- Identify chemical species and emission sources responsible for existing man-made visibility impairment in FCIA

- Document long-term trends for assessing progress towards the national visibility goal for FCIA (& as required by the Regional Haze Rule)
