Benguela Environment Fisheries Interaction and Training Programme
Project DescriptionThe Benguela Environment Fisheries Interaction and Training
(BENEFIT) Programme is a regional partnership between Namibia,
Angola and South Africa focused on fisheries and the marine
resources of the Benguela Current ecosystem off southwest
Africa. BENEFIT was originally conceived in 1995, adopted by the
Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) as a project in
June 1996, and formally inaugrated in April 1997.
The overall goal of BENEFIT is to promote the sustainable
utilisation of the living resources of the Benguela Current
Ecosystem. As outlined in the 1997 Science Plan, this goal is to
be achieved through an active science and technology programme
integrated with capacity development within the Benguela region.
