Data Center Description
The Laboratory for Hydrospheric Processes (Code 970) of the Earth
Sciences Directorate (ESD) at Goddard Space Flight Center is
responsible for a broad range of programs dealing with theoretical and
experimental research in the oceanic, cryospheric, and hydrologic
sciences. The structure of the Laboratory is unique in that it
consists of two science branches, two technical branches, and a flight
project. The Oceans and Ice Branch conducts basic research on the
global oceans and the global land ice and sea ice covers, while the
Hydrological Sciences Branch focuses on understanding, quantifying,
and analyzing different components of the hydrological
cycle. Technical expertise in support of the Laboratory and the
Directorate comes from the Observational Science Branch at Wallops
Island, Virginia, and the Microwave Sensors Branch at Greenbelt. These
two Branches conduct a broad range of research using optical,
microwave, and laser sensors for oceanic, terrestrial, and atmospheric
research. Unique to the Laboratory is the management of the
Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor (SeaWiFS) Project, whose
objective is to develop and operate a system for gathering,
processing, archiving, and distributing data received from the SeaWiFS
ocean color sensor.
