The National Hurricane Center (NHC) maintains a continuous watch on tropical cyclones over the Atlantic, Caribbean, Gulf of Mexico, and the Northeastern Pacific East of 140 (Deg W), from June 1 through November 30. NHC prepares and distributes hurricane watches and warnings for the general public, and also prepares and distributes marine and military advisories for other users. NHC coordinates with Hurricane Warning Offices, Weather Service Forecast Offices, and Weather Service Offices when a tropical cyclone threatens the United States. NHC prepares and distributes probabilities of hurricane/tropical storm conditions for 45 locations along the East and Gulf coasts and offers assistance to Caribbean nations. The Center conducts research and development aimed at general improvements in tropical cyclone forecasting and concentrates on transferring theoretical advances to operational forecasting.
