Mission:
The Redlands Institute's mission is to innovate within its core research agenda, to enhance faculty research, to improve the educational experience, and to explore practical solutions to local, regional and global issues.

Improving Decision Quality:
Our core research focus is to enhance the quality of decision making by applying geospatial science and technology.

Approach Scope and Scale:
Our proven approach employs a highly-structured engineering process to Explore, Plan, Analyze, Design, Build, Test, and Deploy innovative technology applications. The principles, methods and technologies of geospatial science may be applied to enhance research, decision-making and problem-solving for any discipline at any scale.

Geospatial:
We explore and innovate at the intersection of the Geospatial and Information Sciences. Our research enables us to understand the spatial dimensions of critical decision processes. Spatial reasoning involves visualizing and interpreting patterns of location, distance, relationship, movement and change through space and time. Spatial reasoning is a critical skill for solving problems in contemporary society: problems with complex factors embedded in highly interdependent systems that cross multiple spatial and temporal scales.

Interdisciplinary Collaborative Research Teams:
The Redlands Institute is staffed by geospatial scientists and technology professionals who team with University faculty domain experts and students. We actively integrate Geospatial Science with Economics and Business, with the Humanities, with Education, and with the Environmental, Social, Physical and Biological sciences. We partner with key local, state, federal, academic and non-profit agencies, institutions, and programs.

Educational Value:
Today’s students are geared towards educational experiences that are highly visual, self-directed, interactive, and mediated by technology. Exploring the spatial dimension in any discipline unlocks latent knowledge and provokes new lines of inquiry that enhance student experience and faculty research. We work closely with the University’s Learning Spatially (LENS) program to bring spatial reasoning to the CAS undergraduate curriculum, and to programs in the Schools of Education and Business.

Role:
Founded in 2000, the Redlands Institute has expanded to focus on the broader application of geospatial science methods and technologies for research, community service, decision support and problem-solving in many disciplines. Today, the Redlands Institute serves as a University-wide research and development resource.
