Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory, OAR, NOAA, U.S. Department of Commerce

Data Center Description
The NOAA Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory (GLERL)
is one of 12 federal research laboratories within the Oceanic
and Atmospheric Research line office of NOAA. GLERL is a center
of excellence for aquatic research and employs an ecosystem
perspective as an investigation strategy.

Scientists at GLERL conduct integrated, interdisciplinary
environmental research and monitoring in support of resource
management and environmental services in coastal and estuarine
waters with a special emphasis on the Great Lakes. Researchers
perform field, analytical, laboratory and modeling
investigations to improve understanding and prediction of
coastal and estuarine processes and the interdependencies with
the biota, sediments, water, and atmosphere. GLERL emphasizes a
systems approach to problem-oriented and solution-focused
research to develop environmental service tools. Assistance is
also provided to resource managers and others who wish to apply
the information, tools and services developed.
