Abstract:
(Summary adapted from the Glacier web site)
The GLACIER Web Site introduces users to the Antarctic and the
scientists who are investigating it. Through this site, many
concepts of earth science, ecology, and environmental science can be
explored and experienced in detail. The GLACIER program has focused
on the development of a hands-on, inquiry based, thematic curriculum
that integrates into
... the traditional middle school earth, ocean and
space science curriculum.
Through GLACIER users can find a variety of Antarctic information
including maps, pictures, and links to additional resources. The site
is broken into 6 components. There is an Introduction to give a
general overview of Antarctica, "Expedition" describes what it is like to
live and work in Antarctica as well as practical information like
travel arrangements and clothing essentials. The Weather section
answers meteorologically based questions and describes the types of tools
used to collect weather information in Antarctica. "Oceans" is a section
devoted to providing information about which water bodies comprise
the Southern Ocean and how these bodies drive circulation around the
continent. "Ice" is filled with termonology and definitions related to
glaciers and other ice forms.
