Summary Kaho'olawe has a long history, one that is intimately intertwined with that of the rest of the Hawaiian island chain. It differs, however because of some unique geophysical and meterlogical phenomena that have resulted in its not having enjoyed significant population. This lack of population has placed Kaho'olawe in an interesting positionm having been used over the years as an important ... cultural site and religious sanctuary, a penal colony, a ranch, and until recently, a practice range for Naval bombing and gunnery.
Geographic information systems (GISs) provide a key tool that allows researchers, land-and water-use planners, demograpers, and others to view detailed maps of the island. These maps include such information as contours (elevations), known sites of water deposits, military installations, archeological sites, cultural sites, sites of unexploded ordnance, logcations of other uman-made debris, and more. By careful use of te georeferenced maps, by overlaying them, one on top of another, workers can help determine what sites require what amound of remediation, and, generally, aid in the planning and implementaiton process to restore (insofar as possible) Kaho'olawe to its place of cultural eminence for the people of Hawaii. To perform meaningful study, preservation, and remediation requires the use of some modern, computer-based technology. The Kaho'olawe Surveyor is an introduction to the use of georeferenced maps for te purpose of understanding Kaho'olawe Island - its past, present, and future. The user can view Kaho'olawe in both 2D and 3D.
