Summary
The Dataset-Independent Subsetter (HEW) can subset properly-formatted HDF-EOS data files on latitude/longitude bounding boxes as well as on date/time spans. HEW can also extract the channel information you choose from an HDF-EOS file.

HEW, a Dataset Independent Subsetter, can extract a subset of any grid or swath data file that is in HDF-EOS format. ... Subsetting can be performed on:

-Latitude and Longitude (rectangular areas only)
-Date and time span
-Dataset parameter, such as instrument or sensor

HEW is also capable of subsampling by extracting every Nth point of data along geolocated dimensions.

The output of the subsetting operation is another HDF-EOS file which can be further subsetted, if desired. At the conclusion of the subsetting operation, the file can be transferred to your workstation using ordinary FTP commands.

Access Constraints
At this time HEW does not perform subsetting on HDF-EOS "point"
datasets.

Datasets must be in HDF-EOS format. Only Swath and Grid objects may
be subsetted. Datasets that do not follow these requirements
cannot be subsetted by HEW, but may be subsettable by other means.

Use Constraints
When your subsetting request is accepted, HEW returns to you a
subsetting ID. You must make a note of this value, as it is the only
way to check on the status of your subsetting operation at a later time.
