Summary
NOAA is actively engaged in a program to rescue Great Lakes bathymetric data
and place them in established marine geological and geophysical data
repositories at the NOAA National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC). This program
is managed by NGDC and it relies on the cooperation of NOAA/Great Lakes
Environmental Research Laboratory, NOAA/National Ocean Service, the ... Canadian
Hydrographic Service, other agencies, and academic laboratories.

To the extent possible, NOAA will "rescue" Great Lakes geological and
geophysical data and make them readily available to anyone, but especially the
communities concerned with Great Lakes science, pollution, coastal erosion,
response to climate changes, threats to lake ecosystems, and health of the
fishing industry. An important element of this program is the rescue of
bathymetric data and the compilation of new bathymetry for the Great Lakes,
being carried out cooperatively between NOAA and the Canadian Hydrographic
Service. This new bathymetry provides a more detailed portrayal of lakefloor
topography, and reveals some lakefloor features seen for the first time.

available, as well as links to data products including posters and CD-ROMs,
where available. As CD-ROMs become available, preview versions offering access
to images are also posted on-line.
