Summary The purpose of VISTAS is to provide users who have gained access to TOVS Pathfinder data the ability to easily and quickly browse these large datasets without having to write their own data-handling programs. For example: In the case of one processing methodology, Path A, 45 daily parameters (each of which include means, standard deviations and counts) from the ... TOVS dataset are being gridded and stored in 29 MB Hierarchical Data Format (HDF) files. The full 16-year Level 3 data set (1978 through 1994) for Path A will be about 500 Gigabytes (GB) in size. This is a small data set by EOS standards. Reduced resolution datasets containing a small sub-set of geophysical parameters will also be available for browse purposes. VISTAS will work on them as well.
VISTAS Visual Data Probe will allow users to "navigate" the data by specifying which parameters on the dates they would like to visually examine. They will be able to perform basic image processing functions that will facilitate visual evaluation of the data.
Each global parameter dataset (or "image") is displayed in its own window. The user can easily read the geophysical data values of each 1 degree by 1 degree grid box while Zooming and Scrolling around the dataset. VISTAS provides a default black and white and optional color look-up table for full resolution Level 3 parameters. VISTAS will read, apply and store for re-application the color look-up tables contained within the Browse image products.
Access Constraints TOVS data aquisition required pre-registration
Use Constraints VISTAS runs only on a Sun Sparc Station using Sun Operating Systems (OS) 4.1.x and Silicon Graphics Workstations using IRIX 5.1.x. Both operating systems also need X-Window Version 11 Revison 5. Minimum recommended memory is 32 MB. Disk space requirement will depend on the amount of data you wish to process locally. In order to obtain TOVS data, you need to be either connected to the or have an 8mm tape drive. There is also a possibility that TOVS Browse products will be distributed via CD-ROM.
