In recognition of the importance of the marine environment, the United Nations has declared 1998 the International Year of the Ocean (YOTO). This designation provides individual organizations and governments with an important opportunity to raise public awareness and understanding of the ocean and related issues.
This International Year of the ... Ocean (YOTO) is one of several online resources to obtain information pertaining to oceans and their processes. This particular site offers educational elements with facts and activites about the inhabitants of oceans and the problems they face with the current rate of pollution, habitat decline and harvest rates. Some of the species described include Northwest Salmon, Whales, Coral and Seals. There are also practical recommendations regarding ways to keep the oceans clean so that declining species will have a greater change of survival.
Kids' and Teachers' Corner hosts links to several related oceanic educational sites and sponsers. Explore the Globe Program, Project Oceanography, and Get Your Feet Wet are a few such links to additional curricular information. The "Neat Photo" section links the user to a library of NOAA graphics and images while the "Answers from NOAA" section contains of directory of informational summaries in a text-based format.
