Summary This CD-ROM contains 10 pure ocean tidal models, that is,computer programs plus their data files to compute global ocean tidal heights given latitude, longitude and time. The CD-ROM also contains: i) one loading tide model; ii) the set of tidegage data used to intercompare the models; iii) a draft paper summarizing the comparisons; iv) global maps (GIF images) of M2, S2 and other tidal ... components and their current vectors; v) an MPEG animation showing global tides over several consecutive days; vi) a list of references. These tidal models are accurate to within 2 to 3 cm in waters deeper than 200m. In shallow waters they are quite inaccurate, which makes them unsuitable for navigation or other practical applications.
The models are the result of analysis of precise measurements from the TOPEX/POSEIDON altimeters and parallel developments in numerical tidal modeling and data assimilation. The CD-ROM contains the following models: AG95.1 (O. Andersen and older FES model; Kort-og Matrikelstyrelsen, Denmark); CSR3.0 (R. Eanes and V. Bettadpur; U. Texas-Austin); DW95.1 (S. Desai and J. Wahr; U. Colorado-Boulder); FES95.2 (C. Le Provost et al.; Institut de M=E9canique de Grenoble, France); GSFC (B. Sanchez and E. Pavlis; Goddard Space Flight Center); KANTHA2 (L. Kantha et al.; U. Colorado-Boulder); ORI.96 (K. Matsumoto et al.; U. of Tokyo, Japan); RSC94 (R. Ray, B. Sanchez and D. Cartwright; Goddard Space Flight Center); SR95.1 (E. Schrama and R. Ray; Goddard Space Flight Center); TPX0.2 (G. Egbert, A. Bennett and M. Foreman; Oregon State U.); and the loading tide SPOTL (D. Agnew, Scripps Institute of Oceanography). The models were tested on SUN-OS 4.1, SUN-Solaris 2.4, Silicon Graphics, IRIX 5.3, and Cray UNICOS.
